The career of ex-Liverpool star Fernando Torres is going from bad to worse. The Chelsea flop will have to overcome a big fight to secure a place in Spain’s UEFA Euro 2012 squad later this year.
International football returns next week but there will be no playing time for Chelsea’s £50M flop Fernando Torres. The Spanish striker, who is on a terrible run of form since quitting Liverpool for the Bridge in January 2011, has been left out of Vicente del Bosque’s squad for Wednesday's friendly match against Venezuela.

“Torres isn't doing well and we've decided that in this case he won't be involved,” 2010 FIFA World Cup winning coach Del Bosque explained during a press conference.

“It hurts me to leave out Fernando but I cannot be unfair and hold back those who have been pushing to get in. This is a break for him, no doubt, but it should serve as encouragement.

“Players should not get relaxed. This is not a final list for Euro 2012.”

Statistics confirm that the 27-year-old striker has picked up more yellow cards this season than he’s scored goals. Fernando Torres made no use of Didier Drogba’s absence due to the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.

Since netting a strike against Genk in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League, the Spanish striker has not been on the scoring sheet for Chelsea. This makes it more than 1,300 minutes of football with a goal for big flop Torres.

“He is a gamble. I coached him after he spent some time injured but the time for waiting has gone on too long,” former Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti told reporters lately.

The Italian boss concluded with a statement that might draw huge reaction from Liverpool or anti-Torres supporters:

“He is still a great striker and perhaps in the right atmosphere he could return to Liverpool.”
