Group D, which is made up of Canada, Guadeloupe, Cuba, and Guatemala, begins their group stage games on Tuesday, June 27th.

The 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup is currently underway as 16 teams all jostle for the chance to get their hands on the coveted title. With three groups having played, Tuesday will feature the four teams who comprise Group D: Canada, Guadeloupe, Cuba, and Guatemala.

Here's all you need to know ahead of matchday one for Group D.

Who's in Group D at the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup?

Canada

Canada are currently serving as co-hosts of the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup, alongside reigning champions USA. To date, this is their 16th Gold Cup appearance (and 19th overall at a CONCACAF Championship), with their best result happening in 1985 and in 2000, when they won their only two titles to date. John Herdman's team, who were beaten 2-0 by the USA in the CONCACAF Nations League finals earlier this month, are a vastly changed side, with star players like Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David not being called up after their participation in the CONCACAF Nations League. As such, while Canada are expected to get out of their quartet - given that they're the highest ranked team in Group D - it remains to be seen how far they will be able to progress in this competition.

Guadeloupe

Guadeloupe are making their fifth appearance in this competition. Their best result was making a surprise run to the semi-finals in 2007. As they're not a member of FIFA, they have never featured in a World Cup or any other competition organized by FIFA, but are members of CONCACAF and thus are eligible to feature in the Gold Cup. The tiny nation secured their spot at this year's Gold Cup competition after cruising to comfortable wins over Antigua and Barbuda (5-0) and Guyana (2-0). Having lost 1-0 to Cuba earlier this year in a Nations League tie, revenge will definitely be on their minds when they face them on Saturday on matchday two of group stage action.

Cuba

Cuba's last appearance at a Gold Cup was back in 2019, and this will represent their 10th Gold Cup appearance (12th overall for CONCACAF Championships). They're currently ranked 165th in the world as per FIFA and posted their best results at a Gold Cup in 2003, 2013, and 2015, when they finished in fourth spot. After starting off 2023 on a good note with back-to-back 1-0 wins over Barbados and Guadeloupe, Cuba's fortunes took a downturn as they were beaten 3-0 by Uruguay and 2-0 by Chile in their two pre-tournament warm-up friendlies prior to this upcoming tournament.

Guatemala

To date, Guatemala, who are making their 12th Gold Cup (20th CONCACAF Championship) appearance, posted their best result way back in 1967, when they won the tournament. They also finished in fourth place back in 1996, and have had their ups and downs since 2023 rolled around. The team lost all but one of their four warm-up matches, suffering defeats to Mexico (2-0), Trinidad and Tobago (1-0), and Venezuela (1-0) and narrowly defeated Costa Rica (1-0). As such, it is hard to predict what to expect from this team as they aim to successfully navigate through their group stage campaign.

When are Group D's games?

Matchday one for Group D will begin with two ties on Tuesday, June 27th. First up will be Canada vs Guadeloupe, which kicks off at 19.00 EST (16.00 PST), followed by Guatemala vs Cuba with a kick off time at 20.45 EST (17.45 PST).

Matchday two for Group D will take place on Saturday, July 1st. The day will open with a tie starring Cuba vs. Guadeloupe at 19.30 EST (16.30 PST) and conclude with Guatemala vs. Canada at 21.30 EST (18.30 PST).

And finally, matchday three, which will decide who progresses to the next round and who goes home early, commences on Thursday, July 4th (which also so happens to be Independence Day in the USA). To avoid any accusations of match-fixing or other questionable methods, both games will be played simultaneously. That means that the Canada-Cuba tie will take place at the same time as the Guadeloupe-Guatemala one, with both games starting at 18.30 EST (15.30 PST).
