The Bavarians are reportedly close to pulling off the biggest transfer in the history of the German Bundesliga.

Bayern Munich is reportedly in the verge of making Atletico Madrid's Lucas Hernandez the most expensive player in the history of the German Bundesliga. According to Spanish outlet Marca, the Bavarians will trigger the defender's release clause in the upcoming winter transfer window.

The French left-back who made his senior debut for Los Rojiblancos in 2014 has rapidly excelled through the years and has established himself as an integral member of Diego Simeone's side. The 22-year-old was also part of the France team that defeated Croatia to lift the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Hernandez committed his future to Atletico Madrid this summer by penning a new deal that runs through 2024. However, Marca claims that the full-back's appearance against Deportivo Alavés over the weekend might have been his last for the men in white and red as Bayern set to trigger his $92 million (€80 million) release fee.

The 22-year-old will reportedly sign a four-year contract with the German club who aim to get back on track following its poor start to life in the Bundesliga this season. Niko Kovac's men momentarily trail rivals Borussia Dortmund by nine points. The Signal Iduna outfit sitting atop the league with 39 points after 16 games.

Lucas Hernandez's purported acquisition will make him Bayern Munich's most expensive player of all time as his fee will surpass the $47.2 million (€41.5 million) paid for the service of Corentin Tolisso from Lyon in 2017.
