As if losing Samir Nasri was not enough, Arsenal will now have to do without Lukasz Fabianski. The goalkeeper requires an operation which will keep him on the sidelines for the rest of the season.
Lukasz Fabianski had won Arsene Wenger’s favour to replace the unimpressive Manuel Almunia in post. But the Polish shot stopper picked up a shoulder injury and had to miss most of January’s matches.

After studying the extent of his problem, Fabianski is believed to have chosen to undergo surgery. Confirming this issue, Arsenal’s manager Arsene Wenger told reporters:

“He [Lukasz Fabianski] has decided, after having seen a few specialists, that he will have surgery in Germany. It means that his season is over.”

Whereas this appears to be the best option for the goalkeeper’s health, Arsenal have been left with fears over defensive worries. Coach Arsene Wenger was resolute not to spend money on a goalkeeper during the transfer window and the Gunners may well pay the price for that now.

However, the Frenchman insists that he has no headache to manage his squad following Fabianski’s long-term injury. According to Wenger, the solution is simple: Wojciech Szczesny is up for the challenge enough to vie against Manuel Almunia for the goalkeeping role.

“The completion for the place at the moment will be between Wojciech and Almunia,” Wenger stated before concluding:

“Wojciech will play the next game [against Newcastle United].”

20-year-old Wojciech Szczesny made one of his few appearances for Arsenal earlier in January. He was a starter in Arsenal’s 3rd Round FA Cup match against Leeds United in which he was just inches away from making a perfect save of Robert Snodgrass’ penalty kick.

Wojciech went the right way but failed to parried the ball away. A week later, the young shot stopper redeemed himself with a clean sheet as Arsenal won 3-0 over West Ham United in the English Premier League.

So he is set to feature on Saturday against Andy Carroll-less Newcastle United. Arsenal are 2nd behind Manchester United in the league table with 49 points from 24 matches. Wojciech will be keen to help the Gunners cut the 5-points gap to only 2 for at least a few hours.
