After failing to progress to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, “The Special” had some exceedingly frank words to say about the past of the Red Devils.

Manchester United was served a huge shock by Sevilla as they went crashing out of this season’s UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night. The hosts were tipped to go all out and nick the win in the own backyard after failing to return to England with a goal in the first leg Round of 16 game played in Spain.

However, a defensive approach by the Red Devils saw them fail to find the back of the net and were subsequently punished by Wissam Ben Yedder’s brace later in the game. Romelu Lukaku provided a fleeting optimism with his consolation goal but the script of a defeat was already signed, sealed and delivered.

Speaking after the game, Jose Mourinho subtly extolled the performance of his squad. He, nevertheless, risked the anger of disenchanted sympathizers of his current side by claiming that today’s defeat was not something out of the ordinary.

“Of course, being Manchester United manager and losing a Champions League tie at home is a disappointment.

“I don’t want to make a drama of it, we don’t have time because we have a match on Saturday. We have no time to be sad for more than 24 hours. That’s football, it is not the end of the world,” he said.

"I've sat in this chair twice before, with Porto - Man Utd out, with Real Madrid - Man Utd out, so this is nothing new for this football club."

The Portuguese manager and his Manchester United team now turn their attention to securing a top-four spot and winning this season’s FA Cup title.
