Sadio Mane matched a 9-year-old landmark set by Liverpool great Steven Gerrard with his first two goals against FC Porto in Wednesday night’s game.

A beautiful link-up play among Salah, Firmino, and Mane following a rapid counterattacking move resulted in Liverpool’s fourth goal of the night. The break was led by Mohamed Salah from the Red’s half, with the Egyptian slotting the ball behind the Porto defense for Roberto Firmino.

The Brazilian’s goal-bound attempt was initially saved by Porto’s Jose Sa before Sadio Mane followed up on the rebound to rehash an enthralling performance with his second of the night. The brace subsequently made the Senegalese forward the first Liverpool player to score a brace in the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League since Steven Gerrard did so in Liverpool’s 5:0 thrashing of Real Madrid back in 2009.

The game was fully put to bed after Mane added his third of the night with five minutes to end proceedings to secure a 5:0 scoreline for the Reds. The goal consequently made him the fourth player in Liverpool's history to score a hat-trick in the UEFA Champions League.

Jurgen Klopp's side will host FC Porto in the second leg of the tie at Anfield on March 6.
