Dortmund hasn't won a game since September 30, when they defeated Augsburg 2-1. If one excludes a 5-0 thrashing of lower-tier side Magdeburg in the DFB Pokal on October 24th, die Schwarzgelben have gone 12 games without winning a single game. As a result, Peter Bosz was finally sacked last weekend and Peter Stöger was appointed in his stead.
During this awful run, die Schwarzgelben crashed out of the Champions League and have tumbled down from leading the Bundesliga into eighth spot, and are now 13 points behind Bayern Munich. Die Roten now are expected to stroll to yet another Bundesliga crown, which is quite a disappointing result for neutrals and Dortmund fans who had hoped to see someone finally end Bayern's stranglehold on the league title.
Stöger will now have to guide Dortmund through the Europa League next year, where their first opponent will be Serie A side Atalanta, but first up will be this upcoming tie with Mainz, who sit six points and six spots below his new side. Will he be able to give the team the impetus they need to get back on track after a very difficult past few months?
