Both Everton and Manchester City aiming to continue strong start to season

Manchester City

It wasn't easy, but Pep Guardiola's men were finally able to find a breakthrough in their season opener. Manchester City earned a hard-fought 2-0 win over a newly promoted Brighton, with Sergio Aguero opening his account, but the Argentinian international still has yet to develop a formidable understanding and partnership with Brazilian youngster Gabriel Jesus. Fans naturally will be hoping to see the South American duo establish this as City aim to be among the sides challenging for the Premier League title, especially as rivals Manchester United have come racing out of the blocks with two 4-0 wins already in the bank.

In terms of personnel, City will be missing Ilkay Gündogan, who despite returning to first-team action during the the Sky Blues' 1-0 friendly defeat to newly promoted LaLiga side Girona, is not expected to feature until after the international break. The Turkish international has been out for over eight months and naturally will need to be gradually brought back to speed slowly. Other absentees for the hosts will include new signing Benjamin Mendy and Fabian Delph.

Everton

Meanwhile, Everton have made some new interesting signings this summer, including welcoming back Wayne Rooney after a decade away. Rooney has been welcomed back with open arms and netted the Toffees' only goal to earn a 1-0 win over Stoke. Ronald Koeman's men also eased to a well-deserved 2-0 victory over Croatian outfit Hajduk Split in the Europa League and could be possibly incorporating another new signing, Swansea City star Gylfi Sigurdsson into their starting XI for this match.

Koeman will be missing quite a few players for this game. Seamus Coleman, Yannick Bolasie and Ramiro Funes Mori are among those on the treatment table, whilst Ross Barkley remains out with a hamstring problem. Although James McCarthy has returned to training, it's highly unlikely he will play in this match, and Sandro Ramires is still struggling with a heel complaint.
