- It will be the Indomitable Lions’ first Confederations Cup tournament since 2003.
- This will be their first competitive meeting since the 1998 World Cup. That match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Preview
With Cameroon and Chile being grouped with World Cup winners Germany, this is a must-win game for both nations. Die Mannschaft have left most of their star names out of the competition, but Joachim Low’s still have enough talent to finish in first.
La Roja are one of the favorites. Having beaten Argentina to the Copa America title, the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Eduardo Vargas are expected to lead their nation to the top of the table.
However, they have a few fitness worries. The Arsenal superstar sprained his ankle and could thus miss the opener. Claudio Bravo’s calf injury has ruled him out of Sunday’s game as well.
Cameroon are not tipped to go far, but surpassing expectation isn’t new to the Indomitable Lions. Their inexperienced squad, almost identical to the players in Russia, won the Africa Cup of Nations beat heavyweights Ghana, Senegal, and Egypt to the title.
A similar campaign is required from the African champions if they wish to reach the knockout stage.
