Rankings

Here's how Spain and their upcoming hosts are ranked in their group ahead of this match

Spain looking to stay ahead of chasing pack as they take on strugglers

La Furia Roja come into this game having earned a 2-2 draw with Colombia, with Alvaro Morata's late effort enough to ensure that the two teams shared the spoils in a recent friendly. With the exception of a 1-1 draw with Italy, Julen Lopetegui's side have been virtually flawless in qualifying, albeit they are expected to continue to battle it out with the Azzurri for top spot.

As things stand, Spain have a full-strength squad available for selection. Despite being part of Chelsea's title-winning squad, there's still no room in this team for key midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who has not featured fo rthe national squad since EURO 2016. Another interesting snub is Arsenal's Hector Bellerin, whilst Napoli's Pepe Reina, who was in goal during the game against Colombia, is expected to make way for first-choice shot-stopper David De Gea.

Meanwhile, FYR Macedonia aren't expected to trouble Spain much, but the Eastern European outfit are featuring at home, so will want to avoid embarassing themselves in front of their home fans. Spain generally will not want to take them lightly, as they managed to frustrate Italy by holding on to a 2-1 lead before the Azzurri eventually overpowered them with two late goals.

Rankings

Here's how Italy and Liechtenstein compare in their group ahead of this match

More than just three points at stake as Italy take on minnows Liechtenstein

Currently, Italy find themselves in second spot, which means they will have to try their luck in the play-offs. Only first place ends up with an automatic berth to the 2018 World Cup, and as expected, that battle will be between top-20 sides Spain and Italy. The Azzurri are behind La Furia Roja on goal difference, meaning that games against struggling sides will be vital. It goes without saying that it's not just about picking up an expected win for Giampiero Ventura's side, but they will obviously be aiming to win as big as possible.

With an 8-goal differential, Italy, who traditionally are not among the highest-scoring sides, will have to make up that difference - and quickly. Stars like Andrea Belotti, who had an excellent season with Torino, Napoli's Lorenzo Insigne, and Lazio's Ciro Immobile will be counted on to make the difference against a Liechtenstein side who have scored just one goal - and conceded 19 - so far in qualifying.
