Italian football is experiencing a transition. Cesare Prandelli’s blend of youth and experience will contend for the Euro 2012 title in Poland and Ukraine.
How Italy qualified for Euro 2012
The Azzurri went through the qualifiers under a lot of pressure following the country’s poor showing at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Prandelli took matters in his own hands and led Italy to Euro 2012 without experiencing defeat.
Remarkably, the Azzurri conceded only 2 goals in over 900 minutes of Euro 2012 qualification football. Their campaign was marked by ugly scenes when Italy hosted Serbia in Genoa on October 12. Crowd violence from a minor group of hooligans saw the match abandoned. The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body handed an automatic 3-0 win forfeit win to the Italians.
Italy will be hoping to rebound from their defeat against Uruguay when they welcome the United States to Genoa for what is expected to be a tricky friendly match on Wednesday.
Team News
Cesare Prandelli will make a number of changes to his side since they were beaten by Uruguay in their latest friendly match. The Azzurri will have quite a face-lift, as Andrea Barzagli and Domenico Criscito will replace Andrea Ranocchia and Federico Balzaretti in defense and Antonio Nocerino will receive the nod ahead of Claudio Marchisio in the midfield...

Napoli has not been able to replicate last season’s form in Serie A and currently lies sixth in the table. However, they have impressed in the Champions League.

Napoli was one of a bunch of surprise packages in the group stages. Drawn into the toughest group in the group stages alongside Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Villarreal, Napoli held their own and recorded just one loss. The game which Napoli lost against Bayern showed Napoli’s spirit.
A swashbuckling Bayern took Napoli to the cleaners in the first half as Mario Gomez scored a hat-trick. The Italians mounted a fight back in the second half and came within one goal of securing a draw. Despite not having the most elegant players at their disposal, Napoli has some clever and strong players in their squad.
The explosive striker faces stiff competition to earn himself a place in Napoli's starting eleven.

Chilean attacker Eduardo Vargas arrived in Italy on Thursday to incorporate himself into his new club Napoli, who signed him from Universidad de Chile for $14.8 million.
A few hundred fans greeted the player upon his arrival at the Fiumicino airport, where Vargas briefly signed some first autographs. The nippy striker intends to make a name for himself at Napoli and in the Italian Serie A. The player expressed his delight to have made the move to one of Europe's toughest leagues.
"I'm happy, really happy, to be here in Italy," said Vargas, who will receive a salary of $1.4 million per year.
The 22-year-old is expected to join his new team-mates on Friday, and he could make his Napoli debut next Thursday in the Coppa Italia clash with Cesena.
Portugal, Denmark and the Netherlands have their UEFA Euro 2012 hopes in danger as they’ve been drawn against hot favorites Germany in the Group of Death.

Before the UEFA Euro 2012 final draw, analysts tipped Spain or Germany to lead the eventual “group of death”. The caliber of Italy, Croatia and the Republic of Ireland cannot match the power of Portugal, Denmark and the Netherlands. It’s thus fair to brand Group B as the most difficult table ahead of Group C.
Group A and Group D, however, look more even. Poland could try their luck and succeed in reaching the knockout stages as Greece, Russia and the Czech Republic fill the other positions.
Ukraine might have a tougher task since France and England are favorites to clinch Group D’s top two spots. Like in 2008, Sweden may suffer yet another disappointing campaign.
The anxiety ahead of the UEFA Euro 2012 finals draw in Kyiv on December 2 has fiercely hit new levels. The prospect of having Spain, England, Portugal and France placed in one group explains this.

Ukraine and Poland have been seeded due to their status as co-hosts. Spain and the Netherlands complete Pot 1. La Roja and the Oranje are currently superior to any other team in the competition in terms of coefficients.
Pot 2 sees Germany, Italy, England and Russia lined up. The Germans boast of showcasing the best football in the world since the past 12 months, the Italians claim to have found their new talisman in the form of Italy’s “problem child” Mario Balotelli, the Three Lions are looking forward to life at Euro 2012 without Wayne Rooney and the Russians want to keep progressing in the world of football.
Uruguay further confirmed their status in the world's elite after beating Italy 1-0 at the Stadio Olimpico of Rome on Tuesday.

Uruguay defeated Italy 1-0 in a high-profile international friendly match at the Stadio Olimpico of Rome on Tuesday. Once again the Copa America champions proved that they are amongst the strongest teams in the world at the moment with a sweet victory.
Despite the absence of key strikers Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez, Uruguay took the game to Italy, and they went ahead as early as in the 3rd minute when Malaga striker Sebastian Fernandez met a low right-wing cross from Martin Caceres with a precise finish from the middle of the area.
Fresh from a 4-0 rout of Chile on Friday, the Uruguayans continually stringed together crisp passes in the midfield allowing them to push forward down the wings with a great deal of efficiency, with Napoli striker Edinson Cavani looking as dangerous as ever.
Uruguay travel to Rome to face Italy in a high-profile friendly between two former world champions.

The Italian national team lock horns with South American champions Uruguay in a high-profile friendly match between two former world champions at the Stadio Olimpico of Rome on Tuesday.
Italy come into the match on top of their game, after having beaten Poland 2-0 in Wroclaw last week. The Italians finished top of EURO 2012 qualifying Group C with eight wins and two draws from ten games, and will definitely be one of the favourites to win the tournament come next year.
Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli scored his first ever goal for the Azzurri in the encounter with Poland, and will likely partner Giampaolo Pazzini in Italy's strong attack against the Uruguayans. However, Argentine-born Roma attacker Pablo Daniel Osvaldo could be another alternative. Cesare Prandelli, the coach of Italy, must be concerned with Italy's attack, with Antonio Cassano recovering from heart surgery and Giuseppe Rossi expected to be out for a lengthy period due to a serious knee injury.
UEFA Euro 2012 contenders Italy will clash against co-hosts Poland in an interesting international friendly on November 11.

Without the services of a few key players, Cesare Prandelli will have the opportunity to test the strength of other players. Antonio Cassano is in hospital trying to recover from his heart surgery whereas Giuseppe Rossi (knee injury) and Sebastian Giovinco (muscle strain) have been sidelined.
Antonio Di Natale, Andrea Ranocchia and Andrea Barzagli will also not feature against Poland. The spotlight will firmly be on Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli. The youngster is expected to partner Pazzini and Pepe upfront whereas De Rossi and Pirlo could play as starters in midfield.
Football fans will be hoping for a safe and sound encounter between Italy and Serbia this time round.

When both teams clashed against each other in the first leg of this UEFA Euro 2012 qualifier, ugly scenes robbed the headlines. The match had to be abandoned after only 6 minutes of play because of rioting by Serbian hooligans.
Eventually, the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body awarded Italy with a 3-0 forfeit victory. But Cesare Prandelli can now consider Friday’s qualifier to be more or less like a friendly despite the rivalry that stands between Italy and Serbia.
The Azzurri have absolutely nothing to lose since they have already qualified for the 2012 European Championship. The pressure is strictly on the Serbians to achieve a positive result on Friday night.
Among the many teams involved in the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifyiers, only 4 are certain of featuring in next summer’s tournament as of September 6. They are Italy, Netherlands, Spain and Germany.
Group A
Talking about the DFB Eleven, striker Miroslav Klose stated at a press conference this week that “this has to be the strongest team Germany has had if you look at the available players and talents.” Having scored 28 goals and conceded only 5 in 8 matches, it may be hard for anybody to contradict Klose’s statement.
The Germans have secured the top spot in Group A with 24 points. Turkey and Belgium, who occupy the second and third spot respectively, have been left to vie for the group’s unique play-off finish.
September 6 could be a historical day for hosts Italy who will welcome Slovenia in their 8th UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying match in Group C.

Unbeaten Italy have the wonderful opportunity of sealing qualification to the Euros in Fiorentina where Cesare Prandelli used to coach as La Viola’s manager. In an interview with Rai Sport, the Italy boss was quoted as saying:
“Qualifying for Euro 2012 in Florence would be magic, a small dream that would become reality.”
Azzurri supporters, however, are hoping to be treated with a much better performance than what was showcased against the Faroe Islands last Friday. A strike by Cassano gave the Italians a narrow victory in a game they should have won comfortably.
Theo Walcott scored an early goal to ensure a 1-0 win against the Serie A side.

Arsenal had their fair share of problems coming into this Champions League play-off match. Both Samir Nasri and newly appointed captain, Robin Van Persie were suspended following a dreadful evening in Barcelona last season. Cesc Fabregas had just departed for Spain.
Jack Wilshere was injured as well. The midfielder had been phenomenal for the English side last season and thus, was bound, to be sorely missed by the Gunners. Arsene Wenger was also serving a touch-line ban for his rant last season following the exit to Barcelona.
Wednesday’s Italy vs Spain match is one of many interesting friendly encounters in midweek.

Cesare Prandelli’s Azzurri are still growing as a team following the end of the Marcello Lippi era. In the biggest news from the Italians’ camp, Manchester City’s troublesome Mario Balotelli was called up to the squad.
After failing in the 2011 Community Shield under the influence of match hero Nani, the youngster might be offered the chance to show his worth against Vicente del Bosque’s World Cup champions. Spain have quickly improved the size of their name in world football since 2008 and they working towards maintaining their supremacy.
The weekend ended with some Super Cup football in Portugal, England and Italy in Europe...
But in midweek, football fans across the world will have their attention taken away from club football as national teams will take on the pitch in various cities and stadiums. With the qualification fixtures for the 2014 FIFA World Cup revealed, rehearsal time has already begun. But some teams in Europe are not looking too far ahead to Brazil 2014 as the 2012 European Championship is set to come around much earlier.
There will be 3 all-European encounters among top fixtures on Wednesday, August 10. Italy vs Spain and England vs Netherlands will kick off almost simultaneously only to give neutrals a real headache over which match to follow. Portugal vs Luxembourg, meanwhile, will take place later in the night.
It's match-day 38 in Spain's La Liga, England's Premier League and Italy's Serie A. Live Soccer TV looks at the UEFA Champions League zone in each of these 3 leagues.
Spain’s La Liga & Its 2011/12 UEFA Champions League Contenders
Since the start of the season, the majority of football’s public worldwide had their eyes fixed on the Barcelona-Real Madrid duel at the very top of La Liga’s table. But there is more to the Spanish Primera Division than just these two good old rivals and many certainly missed the intriguing journey of other clubs such as Valencia and Villarreal.
Yet, this duo also stands a chance of representing Spain in Europe’s most prestigious club competition next year—the UEFA Champions League.
As La Liga enters its very final day of the 2010/11 season, there are no battles for spots within the top 4 zone. Put the title race aside; it has already been won by Barcelona. Now, talking about Champions League places, the top 3 have been decided.
The last round of this Serie A season has the excitement of the battle for European places to offer.

The action in Week 38 will be focused on the Champions League battle between Udinese and Lazio. Udinese just need a point to qualify, but Lazio must win and hope Udinese lose to Milan.
Considering Milan have absolutely nothing to play for, Udinese are the firm favourites to grab the Champions League spot.
Meanwhile, Juventus have to beat Napoli to have any chance of playing in the Europa League next season. However, even that may not be enough as Francesco Totti's Roma need only a draw against already-relegated Sampdoria to qualify for the Europa League.
The relegation battle was decided last weekend, and Sampdoria, Brescia and Bari will be playing in Serie B next season. Inter, meanwhile, will want to get as close as possible to champions Milan with a win against Catania at the San Siro.
In this preview:
The second-last round of Serie A action will have celebrations and an intense relegation battle.

Milan will play their final home game of the season at the San Siro. The newly-crowned Italian champions will host Cagliari in a game that promises to be a celebration.
Inter travel to San Paolo to battle Napoli on Sunday for the big second-placed clash, while the relegation battle continues. Sampdoria are in real danger of playing their football in Serie B. If they drop points against Palermo, and Lecce beat already-relegated Bari, Sampdoria will be in Serie B next season--a distressing prospect for their fans.
Roma, Lazio and Udinese will continue the charge for Champions League spots. Udinese are two points ahead of the Roman clubs, but they still have to play Milan during the final round of play. Roma travel to Catania this weekend, and Lazio host Genoa.
In this preview:
Week 36 of Serie A action could see Milan win the Scudetto, and another relegation casualty.

Milan can win the Scudetto with just a draw against Roma on Saturday, and even if they don't manage that, if Inter drop points against Fiorentina, Milan will be crowned champions.
With just three games remaining in the season, Milan are an imposing eight points ahead of second place.
Sampdoria, Lecce and Brescia, meanwhile, fight the other fight at the lower reaches of the table. They have three rounds left to save their season, and it is the possible casualty of Sampdoria that is really shocking. A club that was in the Champions League qualifying rounds this season finds itself in a relegation scrap.
Juventus take on Chievo on Monday in the round's late game. The Bianconeri will be hoping to make some ground on fourth place. If Lazio and Udinese draw, and Roma lose, Juventus will be only two point away from what was once an unlikely fourth placed finish.
