The Europa League final between Ajax and Man United will be an interesting affair. It will see Netherlands’ young and exciting side lock horns with a disciplined Mourinho side difficult to break down.
The two clubs will clash in Stockholm on Wednesday in what will be only their fifth meeting in Europe. Despite their rich history in the continent’s tournaments, they have only met twice in two-legged UEFA competitions.
And their head-to-head record is split dead even. The Red Devils and Godenzonen emerged triumphant twice each, but it’s the Premier League outfit that boasts the advantage.
36 years separates their two meetings, with their first clash happening in the UEFA Cup first round in 1976. The Dutch giants won the first tie 1-0, but lost 2-0 in the reverse fixture.
Fast forward to 2012, and these two European giants went head-to-head once again. They met in the Europa League round of 32, with Sir Alex Ferguson’s men winning 2-0 at the Amsterdam Arena.
However, Man United lost 2-1 at Old Trafford. As you can see, the Premier League outfit won on aggregate in both of their previous meetings.
Peter Bosz’s side will face a club which has only won once in their last five games. However, this is a final – Man United will step up their game for the Europa League finale.
