This is dangerously looking like the year Arsenal will miss out on a Champions League spot. Never has Arsene Wenger’s side failed to qualify for Europe’s top-tier club competition, but a horrendous season looks to put that impressive run to an end.
The Gunners sit in sixth position with only a few rounds left to play. The north London have a few games in hand, and should they win them all, they will move within a point of third-placed Liverpool.
First up is a trip to Southampton. Can Alexis Sanchez and Co. win Wednesday’s game? We take a look at the odds.
Recent record at St. Mary’s Stadium
The Gunners have a history of struggling when away to Southampton. They beat them 5-0 in the FA Cup, but the same can’t be said in the Premier League. They lost their last two trips to St. Mary’s Stadium, being defeated 4-0 and 2-0 respectively.
The Gunners are without a win in their last five trips to the Saints. Their last victory there came back in December 2003.
Team news
What is the worst you can hope for when traveling to a stadium you haven’t won at since 2003? Losing your best defender.
Wenger admitted in a pre-match press conference that Laurent Koscielny, the only defender to play every single game in Arsene’s new 3-4-2-1 formation, is a huge doubt. Furthermore, Granit Xhaka will also face a late fitness test.
It’s not all bad news, as Danny Welbeck is fine and Lucas Perez is back from injury.
Recent form
Arsenal beat Man United 2-0 in their last game, but it’s the club’s away form that is alarming. Their 2-0 loss at Tottenham was their fifth away defeat in their last six trips.
All of this means that Wenger’s boys will be in for a tough night on Wednesday. They are, however, no strangers to mounting miraculous late surges, so don’t count them out yet.
