The Spanish midfielder was offered a contract extension by Bayern Munich, but he had already decided it was time to step aside.

What started out as a rumor was confirmed by the source itself, as Xabi Alonso revealed he will end his 18-year football career this summer.

Despite Bayern Munich's attempts to keep him around, the player born in the Spanish city of Tolosa decided to retire in order to pursue another role in the world of football. Alonso made his professional debut with Real Sociedad, followed by stints with Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Known as one of the most elegant players of his generation, Alonso posted a brief but emotional tweet to announce his retirement.

Alonso is a two-time UEFA Champions League winner. He was crucial for Spain's first-ever World Cup win against the Netherlands in 2010, while also helping La Roja to win back-to-back UEFA Euro titles in 2008 and 2012.

The 35-year old player received praises from his former teams and colleagues. Have a look at some of their comments following Alonso's announcement.
