The Dutchman was once an exciting youngster, but has now hung up his boots after playing in four different countries.

Football is a cruel sport which can see promising players’ careers burnout in a season or two. This couldn’t be truer for former Real Madrid winger Royston Drenthe, who announced his decision to retire from football at the age of 29.

The Dutchman was once a highly sought after youngster, having moved to Santiago Bernabeu in 2007. He stayed with Los Blancos until 2010, but only managed to make 65 appearances in Real Madrid’s famous jersey.

He has decided that now is the best time to hang up his boots, but he is gearing up for another exciting career. Drenthe admitted that his reason for retiring was to focus on his rap career.

Drenthe already has a stage name, going by “Roya2Faces”. The Dutchman has already released a song called “Paranoia”, dropping it on YouTube last Wednesday.

The 29-year-old has called time to a career which has seen him play in four different countries – two continents. Prior to joining Real Madrid, Drenthe plied his trade at Feyenoord.

After life with the Spanish giants disappointed, he was shipped out on loan to Hercules, then Premier League side Everton. Spells Sheffield Wednesday and Reading soon followed; however, he has not played professional football since being released by UAE Pro League side Baniyas in January 2016.
