Match facts and other historical stats

  • Chelsea have not lost any of their past seven league games against Manchester United (4 draws, 3 wins)
  • Manchester United have won just one out of their last eight trips to London
  • The Red Devils have lost 16 times in the Premier League against the Blues - more than against any other side
  • Five of thoes Chelsea wins were orchestrated by Jose Mourinho (which is the best record for any Blues manager)
  • Mourinho's only experience managing an away side at Stamford Bridge was back in 2010, when he defeated Chelsea with Inter in the Champions League

Will Mourinho's "homecoming" end in victory or disaster?

Chelsea

So far, Antonio Conte has been in charge of Chelsea for some pretty huge games: Liverpool, Arsenal, and Leicester City (twice). Out of those four matches, the Italian has won twice and lost twice. Arguably, the upcoming tie with Manchester United definitely belongs in that category, and given Chelsea's good record against the Red Devils, he surely will want to make sure that remains intact. Should the hosts avoid losing for an eighth time to Manchester United, it will mark the first time that they have achieved this feat.

Chelsea will be coming into this game having demolished reigning champions Leicester 3-0, with Diego Costa, Eden Hazard, and Victor Moses getting on the score-sheet. Costa in particular has been on a hot streak (seven goals in eight league matches), which is only bettered by his own record from the 2014/2015 season (nine goals in eight league matches).

That just so happens also to be the term during which the Blues clinched the title - but there are of course many more games to play in the season. In terms of personnel, only Cesc Fabregas and Branislav Ivanovic are set to miss out, whilst Kurt Zouma is nearing his return after a long-term absence due to a knee problem. Willian, who missed out following the death of his mother, may make a return, but his international colleague Oscar, who is on personal leave following his grandfather's death may not feature.

Manchester United

As for Manchester United, the Red Devils arrive at Stamford Bridge after cruising to a 4-1 win over Fenerbahce in Europa League action. World-record signing Paul Pogba - who had been viciously criticized in the press and by fans on socia media - looked especially bright as he netted a first-half brace. The result was exactly what the Red Devils needed after a difficult past few weeks that had seen them settle for draws with Stoke City and Liverpool and barely squeeze past Eastern European outfit Zorya.

Mourinho opted to leave star man Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the bench for Thursday's match, but the big Swede is expected to make his return on Sunday. He's scored twice in two appearances against Chelsea and it will indeed be very interesting to see if he can continue in that same vein of form against the Blues. In terms of who's available and who's not, only defender Chris Smalling, who was subbed out during the tie against Fenerbahce will have to be assessed. There also will likely be no room for Armenian star Henrikh Mhkitaryan in the starting XI after the ex-Dortmund man missed out on an eighth straight game due to a thigh problem and his ensuring recovery.

Finally, here's an interesting look at both coaches' thoughts ahead of Sunday's titanic tie:
