Match facts

Head to head record

  • If Man City win this match, it will be their 50th victory over their cross-town rivals in a competitive match
  • The two sides have faced each other 171 times in their history, with Man City securing 49 wins, 51 draws but losing 71 of those to the Old Trafford outfit
  • Interestingly, Man United have lost three of the last five league meetings with Pep Guardiola’s side at Old Trafford.
  • But if the above-mentioned statistic worries the home fans, then there is one more that could send chills down their spines ahead of this fierce derby – Mourinho has won only three of his last 16 competitive meetings with Pep Guardiola. He has drawn six times and lost seven against the Spaniard.
  • Mourinho’s only league victory against Barcelona was back in 2012 when Sami Khedira opened the scoring for Los Blancos at Nou Camp, and then Alexis Sanchez pulled one back for the hosts, but Cristiano Ronaldo silenced the home crowd with his low shot and the famous ‘calma’ celebration

Did you know?

  • Wayne Rooney has 11 goals against Manchester City, more than any other player in this derby
  • Jose Mourinho is the first Man Utd manager to win his first four matches in a row in the league
  • On the other hand, Pep Guardiola is also first Man City manager to win the club’s first five games in charge of the club

Team news

Manchester United

The hosts could miss a number of key players in this fixture – Henrikh Mkhitaryan is doubtful after being substituted in Armenia’s defeat to Czech Republic on August 31. Check out his tweet below:

Marouane Fellaini could also make a late return to the first team despite suffering a back injury in the game against Hull City. Defender Luke Shaw is fighting a late fitness test for this clash after withdrawing from the Slovakia fixture.

Manchester City

On the other hand, the Sky Blues are set to miss their lethal goal-poacher Sergio Aguero, who was handed a three-match ban by the FA for elbowing West Ham United defender Winston Reid. However, new signings Leroy Sane, Ilkay Gundogan and Claudio Bravo could make their debuts on Saturday. Captain Vincent Kompany could also return to action after shaking off a thigh problem.

Analysis

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who once described Pep Guardiola as a spineless coward following their fallout during their days at Barcelona, will be hoping to prove a point against his former boss in this fixture. The outspoken forward once said the Catalan was driving him like a fiat yet he was a Ferrari. The Swede, who has scored three league goals in four appearances for the Red Devils this season, is expected to lead the hunt for goals alongside Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney.

Once great friends cum bitter rivals, Zlatan and Pep worked together during their days at Barcelona

Zlatan, 34, recently uploaded a video on Instagram offering City's new goalkeeper Claudio Bravo a new pair of gloves and added the caption - ''Welcome to Manchester! Here’s some training gear, you’re gonna need it. See you Saturday.'' Watch it below:

Pep’s men suffered a huge blow thanks to Aguero’s ban – the Argentine has scored seven league games in eight matches against the Reds, a statistic that proves exactly why he will be missed. But thanks to the hosts’ renewed confidence under the former Real Madrid boss this season, the Mourinho-Zlatan reunion against their mutual enemy Pep, and Pogba’s marauding role at the center of the park, they could cruise to a difficult win here.

But is also worth mentioning that the likes of Raheem Sterling have been impressive under Pep's tutelage so far this season. The most expensive player in English history has scored or assited in four games under the ex-Bayern Munich boss, something that should give Man United defenders a reason to be extra keen on him. Could he be the man to unlock the opponent's defence on Saturday in Aguero's absence? Only time will tell. But on paper, the Reds have an upper hand.
