The controversial 23-man shortlist for the FIFA Ballon d’Or award continues to upset football fans. It’s Diego Milito’s absence from the contention that is making the most noise.
The Argentine forward’s adventure during the 2010 FIFA World Cup wasn’t memorable as he had to assume the role of a bench player for the most part. However, his achievement in club football impressed the public as he helped Inter Milan to win the treble.

In the final of the 2010 UEFA Champions League, it was his two goals which smashed Bayern Munich’s hopes at the benefit of the Nerazzurri. Diego Milito eventually achieved recognition and received the UEFA Club Forward and Footballer of the Year awards.

Subsequently, his exclusion from the FIFA Ballon d’Or shortlist surprised both football fans and Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti who told Eurosport:

“I’m very sad about the exclusion of Diego Milito from the list of candidates for the FIFA Ballon d’Or. I called him to tell him that this is an incredible decision.”

Apparently, Diego Milito is also concerned about his exclusion from the FIFA Ballon d’Or award shortlist. The Inter Milan striker offered praises to his supporters as he spoke to ANSA, saying:

“I would like to thank those who – whether publicly or privately – made me feel their support.”

So there’s no chance for Diego Milito to win the FIFA Ballon d’Or but his Inter Milan team mate, Wesley Sneijder, could land it come January 11. In the meantime, it will be all about matters on the pitch for the Italian champions this weekend.

They are only third in the Italian Serie A after slipping to a 1-1 draw against Sampdoria last weekend. Diego Milito’s former team, Genoa, are set to give the Nerazzurri a tough test on Friday night as the season continues.
