Belgian striker Christian Benteke can't help to feel confused, since his coach Jürgen Klopp has frequently praised his skills, but he doesn't give him the chance to shine. The former Aston Villa footballer even claimed he was disappointed by how things have turned out for him since the German took over the team's coaching job.
"When a coach says he wanted to buy you when he was at Borussia Dortmund and ignores you, then it’s difficult to understand. Some team-mates told me I was lucky when Klopp signed, because I would be certain to play. But with all the things I’ve experienced throughout my career, I knew it could go fast. I wasn’t wrong,"Benteke stated.
Klopp's touchline rant against Benteke stole some headlines after Liverpool failed to hang on to a two-goal lead against Southampton last Sunday. Following that argument, Benteke revealed he now regrets his decision of joining Liverpool.
"What’s annoying me the most is that I would have never signed for Liverpool if I wasn’t the manager’s first choice. Since I went to England in 2012, I’ve never been on the bench for such a long period. It hurts, especially since I never was as fit as I am now," the striker added.
Finally, the player admitted that he has failed to impress Anfield Road's crowd, given that he has only scored eight goals in 29 games for the Reds.
"I’m the first to admit that I haven’t shown my worth enough for a team like Liverpool. On the other hand, under Brendan Rodgers, I knew I would get the opportunity to show my qualities, to show that I was worth the money and that I deserved to wear the shirt of Liverpool. But now...."the player concluded.
Liverpool will play second-placed Tottenham once the International break is over. Meanwhile, Benteke is expected to play for Belgium against Portugal, following the Portuguese Federation's suggestion to play it in their home country after the terrorist attacks in Brussels.
