Simply put, Olympic qualifying has been a breeze for the USWNT. The Stars and Stripes, who are seeking their sixth straight successful Olympic qualification as well as winning the CONCACAF qualifying tournament for the fourth straight time, have hardly broken a sweat as they cruised through their first three games to top their group. Perhaps the only side that gave them a bit of trouble was Mexico, in which they needed a late goal from Carli Lloyd to decide that match.
With 16 goals scored and none conceded, Jill Ellis's side are well on their way to setting up what will be an entertaining final clash with Canada, but first, they will have to deal with Trinidad & Tobago first.
Against Puerto Rico, Ellis opted to field many of the team's younger players, and rested stars like Hope Solo in favor of Alyssa Naeher, who earned her first shut-out. It was also a historic evening for Crystal Dunn, who netted five out of the team's ten goals and wrote her name into the history books as the seventh American woman to score five in one match.
So far, the USA are still unbeaten in all-time CONCACAF qualifying play, with an impressive record of 16 wins and one draw. Over the course of these qualifying campaigns, they have scored a whopping 91 goals whilst conceding just a measly four and have won four out of the five Olympic titles contested in womens' football. And in preparing to head to Brazil, the USWNT will be hoping to make it a fourth consecutive title, having won in 2004, 2008, and 2012.
Their upcoming opponents Trinidad & Tobago have done well enough in their group, defeating both Guyana and Costa Rica to finish in second behind Canada. Not surprisingly, they were beaten easily by the Canadians, but nonetheless will be giving it their all in a match best described as a battle between David and Goliath.
The USWNT will be expected to get through this match without too much fuss, allowing Ellis to again give some younger players a chance to shine as she begins to decide who she will be taking on the plane to Brazil this summer.
