Having scored no goals but one own goal this season, Inter Milan’s star striker Diego Milito is angry. But Coach Rafael Benitez is confident of happy days ahead for the European footballer of the Year…
Since rounding up Inter Milan’s 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich in the final of the 2009/2010 UEFA Champions League, the Argentine forward hasn’t found the back of the net in a competitive fixture. Against Atletico Madrid in the European Super Cup earlier in August, Diego Milito wasted a penalty as Inter Milan went on to lose 2-0 to their opponents.

Now in five matches this season, the striker hasn’t scored a single goal and he has been substituted in each of Inter Milan’s Serie A games. Last weekend, the treble winners played Palermo in the league but Diego Milito didn’t last on the pitch until full time as he was called off by Inter Milan manager Rafael Benitez.

The Argentine was spotted asking, ‘why is it that I’m always the one to come off?’.

Diego Milito is visibly angry about his current form, but former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is happy with his player. In a post-match interview, Rafa declared:

“Milito had a fantastic game [against Palermo] – one full of what a striker should do to help his team play well. The only thing he lacked was a goal, but he will soon score again.

“I spoke with him, and the only reason why I’m angry with Diego is because he is angry with himself. He must not be concerned about no scoring. He needs to think about the great job that he has done for the team.”

The Inter Milan manager then went on to compare Diego Milito with Tottenham’s Peter Crouch who was once a Liverpool player under the ex-Reds boss.

“The fact that a striker isn’t scoring has already happen to me once. That was with Peter Crouch whom we had signed from Southampton to Liverpool. But he got off the mark, then we got criticized for selling him.

“For us, Milito is a very important player. He showed just that in his movement which led to Eto’o’s equalizer. He will soon score many goals.”
