Italy vs Malta preview - September 3, 2015 fixture

After their EURO 2012 finals appearance, in which they were defeated 4-0 by Spain, optimism nonetheless was growing regarding Italy's chances at the 2014 World Cup. The 2010 edition, immediately coming after their 2006 win, had ended in absolute humiliation in South Africa as the Azzurri were dumped out of the group stages. However, their fortunes did not improve at last summer's tournament in Brazil, which saw them again fail to even get out of their quartet.

With a spot in the EURO 2016 tournament up for grabs, Italy will resume their qualifying campaign as they prepare to welcome Malta - a side that has posed no threat to them thus far - to the Stadio Artemio Franchi, known to Serie A fans as the home of Fiorentina.

Italy

Historically, most of Italy's national squad has been comprised of players plying their trades in Serie A (and occasionally, even Serie B). Although that has not entirely changed in Antonio Conte's team, the former Juventus coach has also opted to select a crop of players who play their club football outside their native country. In fact, nine of his initial selections were based abroad, including two in MLS, three in Ligue 1, and two in the Premier League.

However, Sebastian Giovinco, who now plays for MLS side Toronto, will not feature due to an injury, but Andrea Pirlo will likely start in his first match on home soil since departing for NYC FC. Meanwhile, there is still no room in Conte's group for Mario Balotelli, who is hoping to re-start his career after departing Liverpool for a second spell with AC Milan. As usual, there

Italy's last match finished as a 1-1 draw to Croatia, and as such, they currently sit on 12 points, two behind them ahead of the group leaders' match versus Azerbaijan that's taking place also on Thursday. Given that Croatia easily dispatched the same side 6-0 in their first leg, Italy will surely want to make sure they earn maximum points - and score as much as possible - against Malta, a team that they have never lost to in their past seven matchesThe Azzurri so far have outscored their upcoming opponents 20 to 3, and it was Southampton's Graziano Pelle to grab the only goal in their last meeting.

Italy also boast an impressive home record, especially when it comes to European qualifiers. The last team to defeat them was Denmark back in September 1999 by a score of 3-2.

Conte, whose team are sans a win in their last four games, is eager for his team to get back on track against Malta and then Bulgaria three days later:

Malta

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Malta sit dead last in their group and are still searching for their first win. Pietro Ghedin's side will find it tough, given that they have only scored one goal in their last six matches and have not won a competitive game since June 2013, during a World Cup qualifier. Their most recent win was during a June friendly, in which they defeated Lithuania 2-0. The team, captained by all-time top goalscorer Michael Mifsud are yet to qualify for a major tournament and will have to pin their hopes on the 2018 World Cup after struggling in their EURO 2016 qualifying campaign.

With no hope for featuring in next year's tournament, Malta, who are currently ranked 158th in the world, will only be playing for pride. They were impressively able to frustrate Italy in their last meeting, and whilst it was a defeat, it was nonetheless a respectable result rather than the utter humiliation many had expected they would have received.

Will the Azzurri maintain their 100 per cent win record against the minnows on Thursday evening? Or will Malta defeat Italy for the first time ever in their history?
