La Roja was one of the four teams with which the Copa America started. They lost to Argentina in a decisive game at home in 1955.

Only Argentina has hosted the Copa America more times than Chile with nine, but no team has failed more at making their home a fortress and win a title than Chile itself. La Roja has another shot at winning its first Copa America 99 years after their debut in the world's oldest national teams competition.

Chie is hosting the tournament for a seventh time. It was not supposed to happen that way but Brazil decided to give the organizing responsabilities to them as the Brazilians are coming off from hosting the World Cup and now their efforts are focused on the Olympic Games next year.

Chile has only reached the final twice since there are finals in this tournament. The first time they hosted it they finished fourth (1920). Six years later they finished third and it wasn't until 1955 that they reached the final for the first time. They hosted Argentina at the Estadio Nacional and lost by one goal from Roberto Micheli.

One year later, they made it to the final game again but this time it was Uruguay the team they would have to defeat. This time around, they were theteam trying to defeat the host nation and it also did not work that way. The tournament was still played in a group format and the host nation finished with nine points and Chile six.

In 1979 they returned to have a shot at winning the championship. They faced Paraguay in three different game to determine who the champion would be. The first game ended 3-0 in favor of Paraguay, the second one ended with Chile on top 1-0 and the Final Play Off finished scoreless so Paraguay won the championship with a 3-1 aggregate score.

In 1987, Uruguay snatched the championship from Chile's hands again. Los Charruas defeated La Roja with a goal from Pablo Bengoechea in the 56th minute. Since that day, July 12, 1987, the team that is now managed by Jorge Sampaoili has not even made the final. Their best result since then was a third place in 1991.

Now, almost 30 years after losing against Uruguay at the Estadio Monumental, Chile finds itself with another shot at glory. Argentina is not an easy time to beat but La Roja and all of their fans want to end a 99-year drought. They are one of three CONMEBOL teams to have never won it.

The generation of Chilean players that has been called for this tournament is one of the best in a long time. Most of the team was part of their successful 2014 World Cup squad. Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sanchez are their biggest stars along with the safe hands of Claudio Bravo. Will 2015 finally be their year to conquer CONMEBOL?
