Bacary Sagna will become France’s national team captain – that’s what rumors suggest at least. The new-look French squad is actually set to experience a dramatic change under the leadership of Coach Laurent Blanc.

France player Bacary SagnaFollowing their 2010 World Cup disgraceful campaign, Les Bleus certainly need to put things in place. With Thierry Henry having retired from international football, France are looking to appoint a role model as the team’s captain.

Patrice Evra, who carried the armband for the French in South Africa, is believed to have infuriated France’s Football Federation and fans as well after his decision to rule himself out from Les Bleus’ must-win match against the World Cup’s hosts on match-day three of the campaign. It was always obvious that Patrice Evra would be given a ban afterward.

Rumors suggest that Chelsea’s Florent Malouda and AS Roma’s Philippe Mexes are candidates for the role with Bacary Sagna from Arsenal looking to be the favorite to become France’s captain. Les Bleus seem pretty much focused on creating a new chapter in their history of football, and Bacary Sagna who is keen to help his country achieve success, told L’Equipe:

“As a player regularly called to the squad, I think that, yes [I could be a contender]. But now, what is mostly important is to be powerful. Then I must pass on my experience to the younger players and put them at ease.

“My role is to defend the colors of France’s national team. It’s not my job to worry about that [captaincy issue].
