In an unexpected move, 29-year-old Danish defender Daniel Agger returns to former side Brondby for a mere £3m fee

After 232 appearances for Merseyside giants Liverpool, scoring 14 goals in almost nine years at Anfield, Danish defender Daniel Agger heads back to his home country in a shock moves which sees him return to former club Brondby for £3m.

Once a dominant figure in the Liverpool defense, the 29-year-old defender, who signed for the Reds back in 2006 from Brondby, has seen his playing time at Liverpool drop since last season's arrival of Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure, being liited to only 20 appearances , being liited to only 20 appearances (per ESPN FC). 

And now, after seeing Dejan Lovren join up with Liverpool on a £20m move, Agger has decided to call an end to his time at Anfield.

"Liverpool have been such a big part of my life and my family's lives for so long, that leaving is extremely difficult," Agger told the club's official website. 

"The opportunity arose for me to return home to Brondby and at this stage of my career it felt like the right decision for me. 

"I would like to thank the Liverpool supporters for the incredible backing they have given me in my time here and the warmth and generosity of spirit displayed to my family."

Irish manager Brendans Rodgers, who took over Kenny Dalglish as Liverpool boss back in 2012, made sure to "wish Daniel and his family well for the future", saying:
