For the current La Liga champion, the first two places have been reserved for Barcelona and Real Madrid, although he didn’t say which would win the title.

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone faces a new season “bravely”, with the sole objective of earning the third spot in La Liga. Simeone seems conscious that economic limitations prevent them of conquering the Spanish tournament one more time.

“Barcelona and Real Madrid have structures that allow them to spend 80 million euros purchasing a player, while we have to spend 100 million euros in all of our signings. With those numbers, it’s pretty clear Atletico can’t compete against those teams,” coach Simeone told an Italian newspaper.

Simeone spoke about those teams he believes will be fighting to earn the championship this season:

“Barcelona’s got Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez. Those three are among the top 5 players in the world. Then, you look at Real Madrid and they’ve got Kroos and James Rodriguez. Throw Gareth Bale into that mix, and you get stronger teams than the ones we faced last season.  We have to measure ourselves against teams like Sevilla, Valencia and Athletic Bilbao, and make a huge effort to earn that third place”, Simeone added.

“El Cholo” arrived back in 2011, and earned the first La Liga championship for Atletico in eighteen years.
