The Chicago club confirm the signing of Welsh striker and former Toronto FC player.

Currently in 8th place of Eastern Conference’s table, Chicago Fire aim for a playoff spot and sign experienced striker Robert Earnshaw. The 33-year-old striker returns to the MLS after a short spell with English club Blackpool, where he only made one appearance. Robert had a successful campaign with Toronto FC in 2013 as he scored eight goals in 26 matches for the Canadian side.

Earnshaw has spent most of his career in English soccer, playing for WBA, Norwich City, Derby County, Nottingham Forest and Cardiff City. With Norwich City he scored 27 goals in 45 games and with Nottingham Forest he scored 35 goals in 98 matches, proving his quality.  He has also played for the Wales National Team scoring 16 goals in 58 appearances.

Chicago’s head coach, Frank Yallop, expressed his delight after signing Earnshaw.

“Robert is a veteran player with a wealth of international experience,” said Fire head coach and Director of Soccer Frank Yallop. “He’s a gifted, natural goal-scorer who is already familiar with the League, and we’re glad to have him join the Fire as we continue the second half of the MLS campaign.”

Chicago Fire will visit Montreal to play Impact on Saturday, hoping the players’ disappointment after being trashed 6-0 by Sounders in the US Open Cup semifinal on Wednesday doesn’t affect the team’s performance.
