After a dramatic win against FC Dallas via penalty kicks, Union secure their place in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup final.

It was not an easy win for Philadelphia Union against FC Dallas at the Toyota Stadium last night.

After 120 minutes of play the score line remained 1-1 so a penalty-kick round followed. With a 4-3 result from the spot, the Union managed to get through the US Open Cup final that they will host at the PPL park on September 16th.

Amobi Okugo gave the advantage to Philadelphia in the 47th minute after a quality finish following a nice team play. Union’s goalkeeper, Zac MacMath, made a costly mistake at the 81th minute that allowed FC Dallas forward Fabian Castillo to equalize.

It seems that the mistake motivated the keeper instead of bringing him down he ending up becoming the hero of the night after making two saves in the penalty-kick round that gave his club the victory.

The goalkeeper expressed the following on his performance:

“Unfortunately, [Castillo] got to it first and made us pay. It’s tough because I felt like I let my team down, so I am just really happy that we were able to battle past that and I was able to do the little things to make this happen.”

Philadelphia Union will play their first cup final and they now await for the result of the other US Open Cup semifinal that will take place tonight (9:30 PM) when Seattle Sounders hosts Chicago Fire at the Starfire Sports Complex.
