Chelsea's all-time leading goalscorer is set for a return to England to join the Blues' league rivals, only over a week after moving to the MLS

Former Chelsea star and newly-signed New York City FC midfielder Frank Lampard is close to completing a return to the English Premier League as the Three Lions man nears a six-month loan with current champions Manchester City.

The 36-year-old moved to the US to join the Citizens' Major League Soccer sister club New York City FC, but will have to wait until January to start training with his new club, before kick starting the new season in March.

Unlike fellow New York City FC star David Villa, Lampard turned down a move to Australia to join the Manchester side's other sister club, Melbourne City FC. Thus, the English midfielder will move to the Etihad stadium in order to keep fit.

The Englishman will also be included in Manchester City's domestic league squad, alongside the Champions League's one, meaning he could face his club of 13 years.

"Super Frank" dazzled the Stamford Bridge crowd from 2001 to 2014, winning everything from the league, the FA Cup, the Capital One Cup, Europa League, to the Champions League crown.

Although the Blues' all-time leading goalscorer was linked with a move to Queens Park Rangers to reunite with former manager Harry Redknapp, the player himself prefers a move to Manchester in order to remain in contention for a spot in the English national team.

Chilean coach Manuel Pellegrini is also keen on acquiring the services of the experienced midfielder "to boost their quota of English players in a squad packed full of foreign imports", claims the Guardian.
