After capturing Chelsea icon Frank Lampard and Spanish national team idol David Villa, the Major League Soccer is set to acquire another legend, Ronaldinho.

The Brazilian midfielder was controversially left out of Luiz Felipe Scolari’s squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup as Neymar was at the centre of the host nation’s plans. However, when the #11 Barcelona star’s World Cup campaign brutally ended due to a back injury against Colombia, Brazil’s sixth trophy hopes ended as well. The five-time world champions humiliatingly collapsed 7-1 against Germany in the semi-finals and missed out on bronze medals by losing 3-0 to the Netherlands in the Third-Place Final.

For Ronaldinho, the adventure with Brazil’s national team is perhaps over for good but at 34, he has no plans of retiring just yet. On Tuesday, it was announced that he had terminated his contract with Atletico Mineiro. The club’s manager confirmed the news in an interview with SporTV, stating:

“I can't call on Ronaldinho anymore. His cycle with us has ended. It's unfortunate because he's an idol to all of us. Everyone loves his football, the way he plays and he's a very charismatic person.

“But that's the way it goes. He's leaving and we must move on without him.”

Ronaldinho tweeted his goodbye on Wednesday

"Tomorrow I take leave of this club and this crowd. The history, the respect and admiration will be forever! See you!"

Ronaldinho’s brother and agent, Roberto de Assis, promised that the superstar midfielder “will play until he's 42. He will reveal his future destination on Wednesday.” However, the day went by without any confirmation. Argentine giants Boca Juniors are rumoured to replace the departed Juan Roman Riquelme with Ronaldinho but according to Goal USA, the latter will make a move to the MLS by joining New York Red Bulls, sources claim.

“The Red Bulls could also be feeling the pressure to land another big name after New York City FC's recent signings of Frank Lampard and David Villa,” Goal reported.

“With NYCFC set to begin play in 2015, the Red Bulls run the risk of losing a greater share of the New York market if they don't improve the roster.

“Signing Ronaldinho would do just that.”
