European side Netherlands beat Mexico 2-1 in a 2014 World Cup round of 16 match on Sunday to qualify for the quarter-final.
Louis van Gaal’s men were trailing through huge portions of the game after El Tri striker Giovani dos Santos opened the scoring for Miguel Herrera’s side in the 48th minute.
And with Mexican shot-stopper Guillermo Ochoa pulling of impressive saves as in the group A game against Brazil, the Oranje looked to be heading for elimination.
But two quick, deep into the second half goals saw Netherlands overturn the result to make the next round of the World Cup.

However, the match was smeared with controversy as a stoppage time penalty earned victory for the 2010 runner-up, a spot kick won by Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben.
After Sneijder scored a 88th minute equalizer, Robben gifted his side a penalty in the 91st minute of the game which Klaas-Jan Huntelaar converted to secure progression.

This ended in Mexico's loss, which made Miguel Herrera disappointed

The Dutch side’s 30-year-old attacker, who is labelled a “diver” by many, became a hot topic on Twitter immediately after the incident especially given the fact that the Bavarians ace saw two previous claims rejected by the referee.
HUMOR: The trolls sparked all over Twitter after Robben won the penalty
You could tell it was a penalty by the completely natural way Robben fell over pic.twitter.com/9pFOTF0oRq

Many football fans didn't take the incident lightly, lashing out at the Dutch attacker
Robben is clearly a cheat. The most disappointing thing is the way our commentators discuss his "right to go down"-What does that even mean?
— Liam Roberts (@Educate_NE) June 29, 2014
Robben is the biggest cheat in football.

Arjen Robben should be banned from football. He represents absolutely everything bad about the game.
— Böyce (@samuraihawk) June 29, 2014
Mexico played much better in this match and without Robben diving, it would have gone to penalties. #nedmex #WorldCup2014

Look how naturally Robben dives I mean he was soaring in the sky before any contact was even made

Robben Star Dive penalty. Karma will strike. In the cruelest way possible.

Miguel Herrera was furious with the officiating, slamming the referee after the final whistle, saying: "Today it was the man with the whistle who eliminated us from the World Cup."
"If a referee invents a penalty, you're out of the World Cup. I hope they have a look at what happened and that this gentleman goes home just like we are."
"[Robben] dived three times, and the referee should have booked him the first time," Herrera added. "The referee should go back and caution the guy who tried to cheat. If that’s the case Robben doesn’t do it the second time."

Robben later did admit to diving on one occassion and apologized for it, but was still adamant the stoppage time spot kick was a right call from the match official.
"I must apologise," Robben confessed. "The one [at the end] was a penalty, but the other one was a dive in the first half. I shouldn't be doing that."
Some, though, came to the 30-year-old's defense
Treading on the foot of an opposing player moving at full speed does impede him. It just does. Exaggerated reaction? Of course. Still a foul
— Paolo Bandini (@Paolo_Bandini) June 29, 2014
A penalty is a penalty and if Robben exaggerated doesn't change the fact it was a foul inside the box.
— Rafael Hernández (@RafaelH117) June 29, 2014
Look, Robben embelishes the foul for sure, but rafa made a poor challenge and Robben had a legit penalty denied him earlier
— Carter Fisher (@watwasuthinkin) June 29, 2014
Note that #NED should have had a penalty earlier in the game, however. And Rafa didn't need to step into Robben there.

Are people overlooking into the penalty decision?
Again Twitter will overrate and overlook the reality of certain things, Marquez clearly stepped on Robben.
