Klinsmann heard a lot of criticism after leaving Landon Donovan out of the USMNT squad. He now has the opportunity to silence those critics on Thursday against a well known German squad.

With just seconds remaining, the United States looked to have managed what not many had expected going into the tournament. They had a 2-1 lead over Portugal, and were well on their way to the knockout round.

Last minute heroics from Cristiano Ronaldo and Varela left the Americans shocked and upset at themselves.

Not being able to hold onto that lead means that the USA now has a few different scenarios that could help them or hurt them.

Starting with the positive side of things, as long as they can secure at least one point on Thursday, no matter what happens between Ghana and Portugal, the USMNT will go through to the next round. If they can manage to defeat Germany, that would put them top of the group, while a draw earns them second place.

If they are to lose the game, things can get extremely tricky.

Both Portugal and Ghana trail the USMNT in goal differential, which is the first tie-breaker in the scenario of a draw in points. In order for either Ghana or Portugal to leap-frog the USA, it will take quite a few goals.

Knowing that a draw works for both sides, there has been talk that Klinsmann and his long time friend and German manager Joachim Loew would arrange for a draw.

“I don’t think that we are made for draws, really, except if it happens like tonight - two late goals, last second,” Klinsmann told reporters after the USA drew against Portugal 2-2.

“I think both teams go into this game and they want to win the group,” he added.

Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels has also squashed those rumors ahead of Thursday’s meeting with the USA.

“It would be highly unsportsmanlike and unfair to other teams if anyone on the pitch had such thoughts,” Mats Hummels said.

Regardless of what both sides are saying, it is highly likely that neither side will play with the full intensity as if they needed to win. The USA could go for the three points in order to come out on top of the group, but it would be very unlikely to see Klinsmann throw too many bodies forward, leaving himself vulnerable at the back.
