Egypt vs USA Match Preview

By Angela Asante, Jun 18th 2009
Egypt and the USA both play later today with the aim of recovering from their defeat.

These two will then meet up in the third round of the Confederations Cup tournament. Will this encounter be a game for pride?

The Pharaohs of Egypt showed a spirit of bravery against Brazil. Their efforts were only blown away by a last gap penalty decision which saw the Confederations Cup defending champions, Brazil, win 4-3 in the end of it all.

But the Egyptians refuse to accept the defeat, although they do not deny that the ball was handled off the line. Egypt’s protest is over the way and manner Howard Webb spotted the incident. While Fifa insist that Howard Webb got the assistance of the other match officials, the Egyptians claim that the decision – which was taking about 40 seconds after the handball incident – was based on radio commentary or television replays.

USA and Italian players surround the referee after Clark's foul on Gattuso

Well, the result stood and it still stands, meaning that the African Champions will have to fight hard in their remaining games.

On the same day Egypt were defeat (somehow controversially) by Brazil, the USA also succumbed 3-1 to Italy after being a goal up. Italy’s starlet, Giuseppe Rossi, might well deserve most of the plaudits for this destruction against the Yankees. However, it is also a fact that the USA were affected by a first half red card. Clark was shown a straight red card after he fouled Gennaro Gattuso. In any other game, and for a player who behaved tolerably after the incident, it could have been a simple yellow card.

Egypt and the USA are considered as the outsiders of Group B. They both lost their opening games to giants Brazil and Italy respectively. But who will be victorious when they clash against each other on June 21st?

Egypt to make it through to the semis?

The 2008 African Champions recorded an historic 1-0 victory against World Champions Italy to get their Confederations Cup campaign back on track.

It was a deserved win, full of drama and beautiful play. Analytically, Egypt have the advantage over Italy to qualify to the next round of the tournament. The Azzuri will face a huge task against Brazil whereas the load should be less heavy on the Pharaohs who will take on the USA. Whereas the Egyptians have so far played with courage, energy, and technique, the USA have shown a lot of weakness especially against Brazil.Egypt celebrate their 1-0 victory over Italy

The Egyptians will not only wish to win against the Yankees; they will want to clinch a trouncing victory to make sure of qualifying. If Brazil beat Italy in the other match on the night, then a draw will be enough for the Africans. Otherwise, a comprehensive win will be needed in case the Azzuri manage to defeat the Brazilians.

However, it is not over for the United States of America mathematically. Aside from the fact that they could spoil Egypt’s campaign with a good result against them, they could also make it through to the next round. A surprising thumping victory against the Pharaohs could revive their spirits if Brazil also manage to crush Italy heavily.

Well, there is still a lot of drama in Group B and everything is yet to be decided. Can the Egyptians break the odds and qualify to the semis by beating the USA?
