Germany vs Australia Match Preview

Samrin Hasib, Mar 27th 2011
Germany takes on Australia in a friendly in Mönchengladbach three days after they beat Kazakhstan in their recent European Championship Qualifier.
Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski caused havoc against Australia last year.
Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski caused havoc against Australia last year.
Germany’s display against Kazakhstan ended as a contest in the third minute. Miroslav Beranek perhaps wanted his team to stifle the Germans. However, his namesake, Miroslav Klose opened the scoring in the third minute. Thomas Mueller added two more before the end of the first half.

Germany was sloppy in the second half. Bastian Schweinsteiger was guilty of giving the ball away quite often while the defence did not look very assured. Loew brought in Mario Gomez, Mario Goetze and Toni Kroos late into the game. Klose rounded of the scoring in the 88th minute with his 61st international goal.

Germany met Australia in 2010 in the World Cup in South Africa. The Aussies were put to the sword as they found no answers against a very youthful German side. Lukas Podolski opened the scoring in that game while Miroslav Klose, Thomas Mueller and Jeronimo Cacau also found the back of the net in a 4-0 victory.

Much has changed for the Aussies since then. Pim Verbeek is no longer their coach. Holger Osciek is the new man at the helm. Osciek was the assistant manager of Germany from 1987 to 1990. He was also in charge of current 2.Bundesliga side VfL Bochum from 1991 to 1992. His best achievement with Australia came in January of this year when he led them to the final of the AFC Asian Cup.

Germany has made some changes to the squad following the qualifier. The Real Madrid duo of Sami Khedira and Mesut Özil has returned to Spain as Real is competing in three competitions. Bayern München captain Philipp Lahm has also left the squad for Bavaria. Surprisingly, the tired Bastian Schweinsteiger has been kept in the squad. Tim Cahill has been ruled out and will not travel to Germany.

Joachim Loew confirmed that Andre Schürrle will play a part in the Australian friendly. He might play on the wing while Mueller might move to the position he plays for his club, in the hole behind the striker. Loew will perhaps start Mats Hummels and give the workhorse, Per Mertesacker, a much needed rest. He might even opt to start Sven Bender in defensive midfield and rest Schweinsteiger.

Manuel Neuer might also be rested as Schalke is competing on three fronts. Tim Wiese might start as a result of Rene Adler’s injury. Holger Badstuber needs playing time after being benched by Louis Van Gaal at Bayern and will perhaps hold on to his place in the starting eleven. Mario Gomez might get the chance to play if Loew sets his side out in a 4-4-2 formation.

Here are the squads:

Germany:

Goalkeepers: Manuel Neuer (FC Schalke 04), Tim Wiese (SV Werder Bremen).

Defenders: Dennis Aogo (Hamburger SV), Holger Badstuber (FC Bayern München), Jerome Boateng (Manchester City FC), Arne Friedrich (VfL Wolfsburg), Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund), Per Mertesacker (SV Werder Bremen), Marcel Schmelzer (Borussia Dortmund).

Midfielders: Sven Bender (Borussia Dortmund), Mario Götze (Borussia Dortmund), Toni Kroos (FC Bayern München), Thomas Müller (FC Bayern München), Lukas Podolski (1. FC Köln), Bastian Schweinsteiger (FC Bayern München), Christian Träsch (VfB Stuttgart).
Forwards: Mario Gomez (FC Bayern München), Miroslav Klose (FC Bayern München), André Schürrle (1.FSV Mainz 05).

Australia:

Goalkeepers: Mark Schwarzer (Fulham, England), Mitchell Langerak (Borussia Dortmund, Germany)

Defenders: David Carney (Blackpool, England), Jon McKain (Al Nassr, Saudi Arabia), Lucas Neill (Galatasaray, Turkey), Sasa Ognenovski (Seongnam Ilhwa, South Korea), Luke Wilkshire (Dinamo Moscow, Russia)

Midfielders: Brett Emerton (Blackburn Rovers, England), Mile Jedinak (Genclerbirligi, Turkey), Neil Kilkenny (Leeds United, England), Matt McKay (Brisbane Roar, Australia), Carl Valeri (Sassuolo, Italy)

Forwards: Brett Holman (AZ Alkmaar, Netherlands), Harry Kewell (Galatasaray, Turkey), Nikita Rukavytsya (Hertha Berlin, Germany), Robbie Kruse (Melbourne Victory, Australia)

Germany rarely plays well in friendly matches. Their last two friendly games finished in draws. They will perhaps continue that trend on Tuesday.

Prediction: Germany 1-1 Australia.
