AO Xanthi vs Panserraikos Match Preview
Xanthi will be desperate for points when Panserraikos pay a visit on Saturday. Xanthi have flirted with relegation in the last couple seasons and have managed to avoid the drop. The sense is that this year might be different. The club have been unable to gain many points at home, winning just once in five tries and that home record has been the basis of their success or mere survival in the last decade.
Panserraikos may have been tipped by just about everyone to be relegated, but the newly promoted team are making a real run of it. Sakis Tsiolis’ team endued a poor start to the season which had them last at one point and in recent weeks have rebounded in unbelievable fashion. This renewed fighting spirit was on showcase last weekend when losing 2-0 to Olympiakos Volos at halftime the team produced a remarkable comeback to draw 2-2 and claim a precious point.
AO Xanthi vs Panserraikos Match Report
Marcelinho Leite’s fine individual goal broke up a dour match and sent Xanthi on their way to a crucial 2-0 victory over Panserraikos. It was a victory that brought Xanthi out of the drop zone and put them into 11th place on 11 points, the same as Panserraikos.
The first hour of the match was forgettable as the two teams cancelled each other out with very few decent chances to speak of. On 60 minute, Panserraikos had what proved to be their only real chance of the match to score. However, both Giorgos Giorgiadis and Maurice Dale couldn’t finish from close range.
Minutes later Xanthi were ahead thanks to perhaps the goal of the season. Marcelinho Leite went on an 80-yard slalom past four defenders before finishing from a tight angle past Velimir Radman in the Panserraikos goal. It was a goal worthy of any highlights DVD and reminded one of Maradona or Messi, a truly wonderful effort from the young Brazilian.
Marcelinho had his hand in Xanthi’s second as his headed pass began a play in front of goal that eventually saw Nathan Ellington finish from close range 10 minutes from time to give Xanthi a 2-0 lead and the points.
