Sporting CP Lisbon vs Vitoria Guimaraes Match Preview
The Monday night game is a fascinating encounter as 4th-placed Sporting host 3rd-placed Vitoria Guimaraes. In the knowledge that one or both of the top two must necessarily lost points this weekend, both teams will be keen to take advantage to edge closer to the top of the standings.
Sporting’s recent resurgence was rudely interrupted in midweek as they went down to Gent in the Europa League, albeit with a largely second-string team.
Jaime Valdes produced a masterclass in his new position sitting just behind lone striker Helder Postiga in last weekend’s victory at Leiria, and coach Paulo Sergio is likely to stick to a formula that worked so well.
As usual, one of Portugal’s most consistent coaches, Manuel Machado, has been quietly going about his business in an efficient manner, and in beanpole striker Edgar Silva, Guimaraes possess one of the most dangerous marksmen in the country. All in all an enticing match in prospect and one that is too close to call.
Sporting CP Lisbon vs Vitoria Guimaraes Match Report
The weekend program finished like it had started, with a wonderful topsy-turvy match. Going into the game both sides knew a victory would draw them level on points with Benfica in second place.
It was Sporting who showed their teeth first, putting in a dominant first-half display. Valdes teed up Postiga to open the scoring early on, and on 30 minutes the hosts were two up, albeit in controversial circumstances. Vukcevic’s corner was adjudged to have gone directly into goal, although TV replays showed the ball did not cross the line and should not have counted.
Valdes and Pereira missed good chances to further increase Sporting’s lead, but the match turned on its head soon after Maniche received a straight red card for kicking out at Rui Miguel. The sending off was followed by two goals in two minutes from substitute Targino to set up a grandstand finish.
An enthused Vitoria poured forward and were rewarded in the 89th minute as Bruno Teles finished off a rapid counter-attack to complete a remarkable comeback.
