Bayern München vs Werder Bremen Match Preview
This fixture is undoubtedly the pick of the lot; Bayern beat Bremen badly in the last match these two sides played, 4-0 in the German Cup final in Berlin. Bremen has lost defender Per Mertesacker to injury after the defender collided with an Azerbaijan player when playing for Germany. Mikael Silvestre has joined Werder Bremen on a free transfer from Arsenal. It seems like he has to immediately fill Per Mertesacker’s big shoes.
The Bayern stars escaped unscathed from the international break. They will however be without Arjen Robben for quite a while, perhaps until the winter break. Bayern lost to FCK in the team’s last match in the league and will want to give Bremen a good hammering to rebound.
Claudio Pizarro is a doubt for Bremen due to an injury he picked up against Koeln. Bayern will have to watch out for the likes of Marko Marin, Marko Arnautovic and Aaron Hunt alongside plenty of attackers. Bremen’s defence, however, has been far from resolute so far and this could be their undoing. Both sides have picked up three points this season.
Bayern München vs Werder Bremen Match Report
The game ended in a 0-0 draw but was nonetheless entertaining. Both teams must work on their finishing though ahead of this week’s Champions League openers.
Bastian Schweinsteiger shot from distance when a better option would have been to pass to the on-rushing Ivica Olic. Tim Wiese duly saved. Werder, after a very good and fast attacking move should have gone 1-0 up but Marko Marin was denied by the on-rushing Hans- Joerg Butt. Marko Marin took a ferocious shot from outside the box a while later but was denied by none other than Butt. Mueller managed to miss a header when it was easier to score towards the end of the half.
Toni Kroos came on in the second half to replace Miroslav Klose who served as the “No 10” for the first half. After play began, Werder, following confusion in their own box broke away. Marko Arnautovic beat Daniel Van Buyten and sent a mouth watering ball into the box but Wesley’s shot was blocked.
Toni Kroos’s came very close to opening the scoring when Franck Ribery sent a ball into the box directly to him. His shot was wide. Butt and Wiese had to pull off a few great saves. Both teams continued to be wasteful in front of goal. Despite the fact that Mario Gomez, who came on a substitute, missed a good opportunity, Louis Van Gaal might consider starting him.
