Portugal vs Mozambique Match Preview

Angela Asante, Jun 4th 2010
Coach Carlos Queiroz will lead his Portuguese players to their last warm-up game ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup with a friendly match against Mozambique. The date for this fixture has been set for June 8, exactly a week before Portugal open their World Cup campaign with a crucial game against Sven Goran Eriksson’s Cote d’Ivoire.

Raul Meireles, Deco, and Cristiano Ronaldo communicating during Portugal's friendly match against Cameroon. There will be some playing time for Pepe, according to reports. The Real Madrid defender suffered an injury last December while playing against Valencia. He had been recovering in hospital and following fitness programs to be ready in time for the 2010 World Cup. As Carlos Queiroz explained in a statement, Pepe will make his return to the field against Mozambique:

“As it should be according to the plan drawn up, Pepe should play a little against Mozambique.”

Portugal’s relatively good performance against Cameroon last Monday revealed the team’s determination to work and to win as a team. Manager Carlos Queiroz said that “all 23 players can be starters as they all share the ambitions of the Selecção”. One thing that the Portuguese have improved on is the goal scoring issue. After surprisingly stumbling to a 0-0 draw against 117th ranked side Cape Verde, they finally banged in more than two goals against Cameroon since their 4-0 defeat of Malta in the European World Cup qualifiers.

Interestingly, Portugal Captain Cristiano Ronaldo hasn’t scored since netting a goal against the Czech Republic on June 12, 2008 in the European Championship. The Real Madrid forward joked a couple of months ago that he was keeping his goals for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Now the coinciding side of this fact is that his friend and foe, Wayne Rooney, also endured a goal drought under his respective national team shirt for two years. Either way, Carlos Queiroz is optimistic about his team’s shape going into the World Cup and he is also hopeful that Cristiano Ronaldo’s form in South Africa will influence Portugal to success. Until then, Portugal have a match to play against Mozambique on June 8.
