Italy vs Cameroon Match Preview

Angela Asante, Mar 1st 2010
For another time in the history of football, Italy and Cameroon will clash together. The game is due to kick off at 19:45 GMT at the Stade Louis II in Monaco, France.

Marcelo Lippi at a press conference with the 2006 World Cup trophy beside him.The Azzurri possess a strong record against African teams. But who knows if Cameroon won’t emulate the achievement that Egypt managed to have during the 2009 Confederations Cup tournament when they triumphed over Italy?

Injury-hit Italy squad has different faces

Marcelo Lippi will be testing his side in an interesting friendly fixture against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon. The World Cup winning coach affirmed some time ago how dangerous African teams could be during South Africa.

In what will be the first of Italy’s three international friendly encounters ahead of the tournament in June, Marcelo Lippi will have the chance to test and to ready the Azzurri against an African nation, Cameroon.

However, the manager will have to do without a bunch of stars.

Francesco Totti – who is willing to come out from retirement for the 2010 World Cup – is yet to overcome his fitness worries.

Meanwhile, right winger Camoranesi and right back Zambrotta have been sidelined. Striker Luca Toni and the 2006 Goalkeeper of the Year award winner Gianluigi Buffon are both out with injuries.

Marcelo Lippi has dropped Fabio Grosso (due to the player’s lack of playing time at Juventus).

Instead, the coach has included three new faces in the Italy squad; Bari defender Leonardo Bonucci, Cagliari midfielder Andrea Cossu, and Palermo’s keeper Salvatore Sirigu will be making their first appearance in an Azzurri shirt.

According to reports, Marcelo Lippi will be playing a 3-4-3 formation against the Indomitable Lions on Wednesday night in Monaco.

Cameroon looking to gain some vital experience

Cameroon’s manager Paul Le Guen hasn’t got much time in reality to build up a squad capable of breaking barriers at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The country’s quarter-final exit at the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola back in January reminded fans about the team’s weaknesses in some areas.

Ahead of South Africa 2010, the Indomitable Lions need to regroup and to improve in order to avoid disappointment during the tournament.

Paul Le Guen’s decisions

Surprisingly, Cameroon’s coach Paul Le Guen has decided to leave out a number of regular lads.

Geremi, Andre Bikey, Binya, Efoulou, Chedjou, and Ndy Assembe constitute the list of players who will not participate in Wednesday’s friendly match against Italy.

34-year-old Rigobert Song is also part of these excluded players. But his younger brother, Alexandre Song, is expected to feature for the Cameroon against Italy.

Coach Paul Le Guen has also called up Tottenham’s Assou-Ekotto and Sebastien Bassong. This duo missed the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in South Africa through injury.

Eto’o the man to watch?

Marcelo Lippi’s Italian three-man defense will surely try to deny Inter Milan’s Samuel Eto’o from inspiring Cameroon. But the Azzurri may not need to work that match against the striker as he seems to be out of form.

Eto’o netted only once during the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations and after featuring in 21 Seria A matches, he is yet to add more to his 8-goal tally for Inter Milan.

How well will he use his Seria A experience against Italian defenders to help Cameroon achieve a positive result?

Italy vs Cameroon head to head

Both teams clashed twice over the years with both meetings being World Cup fixtures. During Spain 1982, Cameroon came from a goal down to draw 1-1 against the Azzurri on the last match-day of the group stages.

However, that result was not enough to prevent the Indomitable Lions from going home early.

In 1998, Italy and Cameroon were drawn in the same group as well. This time, the Cameroonians suffered a 3-0 defeat which eventually downed them to the last spot in the table.

In 2010, can the Africans take revenge on the 2006 World Cup champions Italy?
