Real Madrid vs Olympique Lyon Match Preview

Angela Asante, Mar 8th 2010
On May 22nd, the Santiago Bernabeu will host the final match of the UEFA Champions League competition. But on March 10th, destiny will reveal whether the stadium’s owners Real Madrid will even have their hopes of featuring in May’s final alive.

Real Madrid will actually tackle Lyon in Spain at 19:45 GMT with the mammoth task of destroying the demons that have spat them out from the last sixteen in Europe at each of their last five attempts to reach the quarter-finals.

Real Madrid to attack Lyon

The Spanish giants are a goal down going into the second leg on Wednesday following the 1-0 defeat which they suffered at the Stade Gerland in France some few weeks ago.

Since this loss in the UEFA Champions League, Real Madrid have bounced back with great results in La Liga.

First they thrashed Villarreal 6-2 at everyone’s surprise before trouncing bottom club Tenerife 5-1. Last weekend, Real Madrid stunned football’s public as they came from two goals down to triumph 3-2 against Sevilla on Day 25.

With a record of 14 goals scored in 3 matches, Los Blancos have showed that they have fire burning in their belly. But will they be able to apply their gun machines effectively on Olympique Lionnais come Wednesday night?

As Real Madrid were unable to score an away goal, they will not only need to win at the Santiago Bernabeu but they’ll also need to grab at least a two-goal margin win should they fail to keep their lines clean from the Lyonnais.

Ironically, even the result of their mighty comeback against Sevilla last week will not be enough to push them through to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Veteran midfielder Guti acknowledged this factor:

“There will be no room for such mistakes on Wednesday,” he told the press speaking about Real Madrid’s 2-0 deficit at a point in the game against Sevilla last weekend.

Lyon: Yes We Can!Lyon players celebrate after Makoun breaks the deadlock against Real Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie.

In contrast to the Spanish giant’s current form, Lyon have been unconvincing.

Aside from the fact that they should have buried Real Madrid 4-0 at the Stade Gerland the last time out considering the number of chances that the French had, Lyon also played quite passively last Sunday.

They could only draw goalless away to Boulogne-Sur-Mer in the French league and that result leaves manager Claude Puel with much job to do as he tries to reorganize his squad ahead of the Madrid clash.

But for young midfielder Pjanic, Lyon do not need to panic as their opportunities are wide opened.

“Real are a quality team but we are also going to take our chances. Moreover we have a one-goal advantage.

“Everyone is mentally prepared to combat Madrid and we have trust as well. We will have to be solid, well established, and we’ll need to defend collectively and score too. Real Madrid must be aware of what we can do,” Pjanic concluded.

Echoing his team mate’s opinion, Lyon captain and defender Cris stated:

“Frankly, we honestly believe that we can [reach the quarter-finals] despite the fact that Madrid are favorites.

“This will be a match between 22 players and nothing more than that. Besides, their stars don’t worry us more than it should.”

Now if Lyon look confident going into Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League match at the Santiago Bernabeu, so do Real Madrid.

Speaking to Spanish paper Marca, Lassana Diarra gave tips on how Los Blancos will have to approach the game.

“We need to pressurize Lyon, inflict fear, and score an early goal. The match will surely be different from the first leg. We will have to commence strongly and make sure that they don’t score any goal.

“We will have to play with aggression from the start.”

Looking at the media’s interest in this Real Madrid vs Lyon clash, the atmosphere during the game promises to be like a final.

Exactly 880 media accreditations have been approved and those include 11 pitch-side cameras and 54 live television broadcasts.

People living in Qatar, Ireland, Denmark, Croatia, Hungary, Greece, Holland, Austria, Belgium, Mexico, the Czech Republic, China, Argentina, England, Switzerland, Japan, Portugal, Germany, France, and of course Spain, will have the opportunity to watch this game live, Realmadrid.com reported.

Inspirational midfielder Guti expressed how significant this Round of 16 clash meant to the entire Real Madrid club, and he also tipped the fans to play a great role in Los Blanco’s European destinity.

“We will be playing the most important match we’ve had so far this season,” the veteran declared last Sunday.

“We feel ready for it thanks to our victory yesterday [against Sevilla]. The supporters were wonderful and I’m sure that we will have a good night [on Wednesday] if they support us like that again.

The nine-time European champions are yet to enjoy successful Champions League campaigns in recent years.

As a result of their disappointing record, Real Madrid were denied from their ‘top seed’ status ahead of the group stage draws for the 2009/2010 European campaign.

Guti voiced out every Real Madrid player or fan’s opinion regarding their miserable fate in the UEFA Champions League since the past years.

“We need to make our mark in Europe. People must see that we are a strong team capable of winning the competition.

“We will reach the next round in the Champions League through our drive and the support of our fans.”

Real Madrid vs Lyon - Quick Team News

Spectators might witness a lot of dynamism in a game which will surely turn out to be more of a mental battle than a physical contest.

Injured Real Madrid players Karim Benzema and Drenthe will not be able to join in the play.

Xabi Alonso and Marcelo will also miss the encounter through suspension while Lyon’s Brazilian player Michel Bastos will seat out the game as well after failing to recover in time from the muscular worries which he sustained last weekend.

Real Madrid vs Lyon - My PredictionCristiano Ronaldo surrounded by his Real Madrid team mate as the team celebrates the play maker's goal against Marseille.

Considering Real Madrid's current form and state of mentality it should be extremely hard for Lyon to progress at their expense.

The Santiago Bernabeu especially is a special venue and Real Madrid have not recorded anything other than victories on this ground in La Liga.

In the Champions League however, the condition is different as Los Blancos - who played without play maker Cristiano Ronaldo - were defeated 3-2 against AC Milan in the group stages.

But the atmosphere during Wednesday's showdown will definitely be greater than the one that was created during the Real Madrid vs AC Milan clash back in October.

I expect a dynamic and attacking game which will see Real Madrid come on top of the visitors Lyon.

Cristiano Ronaldo might be on target as he looks to extend his six-goal tally in Europe this season.

If Real Madrid indeed stay true to their rapid style of play, they could win 3-1 whether after 90 minutes or 120 minutes of football.
