Argentina - Mexico Live Commentary

' The debate surrounding goal-line technology will rage on after tonight, as Tevez was certainly offside when he headed in Messi's ball.
' Carlos Tevez was my man of the match tonight, he led the line brilliantly and scored two goals - one which was a superb finish.
' So, it's Germany versus Argentina next Saturday and that is a tie that should be an absolute cracker.
' Rafael Marquez is having words with the assistant referee while the Argentines celebrate on the pitch.
' That's it! The referee blows his whistle and Argentina advance to the quarter-finals! Mexico bow out.
90+3' Franco is offside and that should be that when Argentina pump it long from this free-kick.
90+2' Great effort Messi! Lovely work from the Barcelona man as he cut inside before unleashing a rocket...tipped over by Perez.
90+1' Argentina are just running the clock down by holding onto the ball down the right.
90' Three minutes of injury time to be played here.
90' Franco fouls Burdisso on the edge of the Argentina box and Maradona's men can eat away more time.
89' Osorio then puts a low cross in from wide right but Romero gets down well to claim and hold onto the ball.
88' Osorio has an attempt from range that sails well wide. That's a woeful effort and it seems like Mexico have run out of ideas.
87' Argentina sub: Maxi off, Pastore on.
86' Maxi does eventually go off temporarily and Mexico launch an attack, but the shot that comes in is well wide.
85' Maxi has a touch of cramp and he is receiving treatment on the pitch. Definite gamesmanship as he could easily be treated a couple of feet away on the sidelines!
83' Heinze flings himself at the ball to head away at the front post. He's been top class at the back for Argentina tonight.
82' Torrado tries a sweeping pass to Barrera but Maxi intercepts. Mexico win a corner now.
81' A poor chest down from Hernandez squanders possession as it was behind Franco. Mexico come again though.
80' Salcido wins the corner for Mexico off Otamendi. It's a great cross from Barrera but Heinze is the hero at the back post to get his body in the way of Marquez, who was ready to put the ball in the net!
79' Argentina sub: Gutierrez on, Di Maria off.
78' Higuain provides Messi with a hospital pass and the superstar loses out this time. Barrera goes on a good run at the other end but he wastes possession.
77' Mexico need one last push to set up a grandstand finish here in Soccer City, there's not long to go now!
76' Messi somehow holds onto the ball despite being hussled by three defenders. But Argentina lose it and the move breaks down.
75' Argentina win a free-kick in their own half and Veron is in no hurry to take this.
74' Heinze does well to intercept a crossfield pass and Argentina can break up the play. Messi brings it forward but Marquez reads the game well and blocks his ball through.
73' That has made things extremely interesting and Mexico have a spring in their step now.
' Hope for Mexico as Hernandez turned brilliantly into the box, before advancing and hammering the ball into the top corner with his left peg. Cracking finish!
70' Great clearance off the line by Heinze! So unlucky for Mexico at the far post, it bounced up and over Romero but the defender was in the way!
69' Argentina sub: Tevez off, Veron on.
68' The quality has really gone out of this game now, as Mexico are getting a bit desperate.
67' Wendy Woo writes: "As a Man Utd fan I have to say if we had Tevez playing for us last season we would have won the premiership! He is a World Class player and a real asset to any team!"
66' Dos Santos clips a ball in from the right but Demichelis heads it away. Argentina only need to see this out now.
65' Mexico are pushing forward but they don't seem to have a cutting edge in the final third.
64' But the short one is wasted and Carlos Tevez is the man back there getting the ball back - great work from the two-goal hero.
64' Another corner to Mexico, conceded by Heinze.
63' Mexico win a corner after Salcido's long range effort was palmed behind by Romero. From the resulting ball in Hernandez gets a clear head in, but it flies over! Good chance.
62' Mexico sub: Franco on, Guardado off.
61' Guardado has a pop from long-range, but it flies over and will be his last act of the game.
60' Lovely play by Barrera to beat two men and break into the area, but instead of pulling it back he hit it into the side netting.
59' Mexico have been really sloppy at the back so far this evening, as Franco looks like he is coming on.
58' Another opportunity from Argentina! A nice move but Maxi couldn't quite get it out from under his feet in the area. Rodriguez then nearly gifts them another goal, but Perez clears up a ricochet by smacking it clear.
56' Great covering from Juarez, after nearly a costly error from Rodriguez. He tried to dribble the ball out and got caught, but Juarez came over to deny Tevez.
55' Mexico try and hold onto the ball at the back, but Osorio is forced to knock it long.
54' Mexico have it all to do now. That was a superb strike from Tevez, and Argentina are on cruise control.

51' Marquez is hurt after a clash with Messi. The Mexico skipper is back on his feet though.
50' Barrera gets in space down the left and he tries a chip across the box. But there is no-one coming in at the back post to put it away.
49' The Mexicans have started the half brightly, but they need to score soon if they are going to give this a go.
48' Demichelis makes a mistake at the back and nearly lets in Barrera. Mexico press forward but Argentina hack it away.
47' Torrado can't beat the first man from the comes out to Salcido who has a crack, but he drags it wide.
46' Barrera wins an early corner for Mexico.
46' The game gets underway once more.
' Mexico sub: Bautista off, Barrera on.
' Geerish from Mauritius says: "an exciting first half.. except for the referee's blunder. It will be the talking point of today's matches, england being the first one and now mexico..The referee could have made history today, if he refused the goal following the replay.. He would have shown that replays can be used by referees in their decision-making and it takes less than 30 seconds."
' Richard Flann says: "i think argentina will win 3-1 with messi scoring for argentina and marquez for mexico."
' The offside goal has once more raised the question of goal-line technology. Following Lampard's disallowed effort earlier today, the debate will no doubt rage on.
' Definitely Joe. Things were getting a little heated to say the least. I reckon we'll see a red card before full-time.
' Joe in Ashton-under-lyne writes: ""Bit of argy bargy at the end there James. Argentina look so good though! Top of my list to win the World Cup. Argentina vs Germany will be a cracker!"
' Erick Rivera remarks: "Great first half, hopefuly messi scores."
' You're right Jacky! He did react angrily and smack the camera! I wonder if that will come back to him.
' Jacky Chan says: "Henize should get a red card for slapping the camera man during the second goal celebration!"
' Share your views on an exciting half by emailing me on .
' This one is going to get really lively after the break, Mexico are obviously not happy about the first goal.

42' Just a few minutes before half-time. Are we going to see another goal before the break?

40' Di Maria goes down in a heap on the touchline and Argentina win a free-kick.
39' Guardado tries a curling effort that flies well wide. I don't know if that was a cross or a shot.
38' Free-kick to Mexico just outside the area on the right, can they do anything with this?
37' Great save Perez! Di Maria broke into the box and hit a low shot at goal, but the Mexico stopper did enough to get his body in the way!
36' Crucial header from Juarez, as Messi was lurking at the back post to head in! Osorio gave the ball away again there! He's having a shocker.
35' Dos Santos and Otamendi are involved in a heated exchange, but the referee keeps the cards in his pocket.
34' Salcido has a crack at the other end...saved in style by Romero!
' Disaster for Osorio! He gave the ball away in a terrible position and Higuain robbed him to take it round the keeper and put Argentina two up - a gift!
32' It's keep-ball for Argentina again now, as Mexico are chasing shadows.
31' Hernandez is offside as he collects the ball. The linesman got that decision right, unlike his colleague at the other end.
30' Marquez is penalised for a foul on Tevez, he needs to be careful after that booking a few minutes ago.
29' Argentina are probing for a second goal here, as the Mexicans try and regroup after that blow.
28' Rafael Marquez is booked for a tackle on Barcelona team-mate Messi.
27' The game eventually gets going again.
' Messi slid in Tevez, the keeper parried it out but Messi chipped it back over to Tevez, who headed it in! He was in an offside position, but the goal is given!
' The Mexico and Argentina players surround the linesman, but the goal will stand!
' Controversy! The goal might have been disallowed after seeing the replay on the big screen!
24' Juarez gives it away in the middle of the park but Guardado does really well to rob Messi of the ball, as Argentina were about to launch a swift attack.
23' Heinze gets into an advanced position and goes down under a challenge from Marquez, but nothing given by the referee.
22' Argentina knock the ball around midfield and back to defence, it's great possession play.
21' So after a frantic first 20 minutes, neither side is on the scoresheet yet. But there will definitely be goals in this one.
19' Di Maria loses out to Juarez and Mexico attack, but Heinze gets a vital foot in on Hernandez, who was in a dangerous position on the edge of the area.
18' Argentina are holding onto the ball now. They are going for the slow build-up.
17' Messi is involved in everything that Argentina are doing, he's the dangerman, as we knew he would be of course.
16' Messi is felled by Osorio but no cards as yet, despite the bad foul.
15' What an exciting first 15 minutes it has been in Soccer City. Who will make the breakthrough?
14' Hernandez shoots narrowly wide! The Manchester United man could have perhaps fed in Bautista, but had a crack anyway which had the keeper scrambling. Good effort.
13' Salcido concedes a corner after Higuain was found in space in the area. Rodriguez's ball is headed clear and Di Maria has a pop...wide.
12' Messi comes forward again, he's causing problems, and after a great run he tries a cheeky chip, but Perez was aware of the danger and caught the ball on the line!
11' Tevez nicks the ball away from the defender and slides in Higuain, but the pass is just too strong!
10' Well, well, well. Looking at a replay of the Salcido effort, I don't quite know what the keeper was doing! So unlucky for the Mexicans though.
9' Guardado then has a pop from the inside right....inches wide! What a start from Mexico!
9' It's off the bar from Salcido! What a stunning strike from way out, and it rattled the woodwork!
8' Messi gets into his stride now...he dribbles forward with his quick feet and has a crack...blocked. The pass to Tevez may have been the better option.
7' Rodriguez gets a good foot in on Higuain on the touchline. Mexico have been solid at the back so far.
6' The referee temporarily stops the game to get rid of some streamers on the pitch, thrown on by the Argentina fans.
5' Mexico advance down the left after a nice exchange of passes, but the cross doesn't quite reach Dos Santos.
4' Torrado gets a great challenge in on Messi. A nice 'welcome to the game' tackle!
3' Bautista is working hard up front already for Mexico, he might have to do a lot of chasing down tonight.
2' Marquez sprays a ball forward to Giovani Dos Santos, but just overhits it. Nice idea though.
1' Argentina pass the ball around in the opening minute as the game slowly gets going.
1' The game gets underway.
' Both teams belt out their respective anthems and we are minutes away from kick-off.
' The players emerge from the tunnel in Soccer City, here we go!
' The firepower Argentina have going forward is quite something - Di Maria, Tevez, Messi and Higuain. Imagine looking at that team sheet as a Mexico defender!
' Has anyone got a bet on Higuain as top scorer for the tournament? After a previous hat-trick, he might be in the goals tonight.
' Argentina have been highly impressive going forward so far this summer, but is their defence strong enough for them to go all the way?
' Ricardo from Mozambique writes: "Hi James! Sorry about the England tragedy, I was rooting for them! I realise Maradona may not be the most popular guy in England, but in a World Cup where coaches put as many defenders as possible out there, one must admire his guts in putting forward a lineup with Maxi R., Messi, Tevez, Higuain and Di Maria! As a big Benfica fan I'm hoping for a dazzling performance from Di Maria on that left flank, he is the one Argentine star yet to shine! But above all let's hope for a great game with a lot of goals. Argentina to emerge victorious 3-1, with Messi bagging two goals!"
' Fancy a bet on the game? SKYBET have priced an Argentina victory at 4/7, the draw is 11/4, and a Mexico win is 5/1.
' Nellie Boy has got in touch to say: "What disappointment do you refer too? England overperformed to get out the group and rode their luck to get there. Really looking forward to tonight as both teams set out to win with flair. I can see the first high scoring thriller. Hope so anyway - I've got 5 goals or more on at the bookies."
' Get in touch with your predictions on the game. Will Messi sparkle in Soccer City? Or will the Mexicans snuff him out?
' The referee tonight is Roberto Rosetti (Italy).
' Mexico: Perez, Osorio, Rodriguez, Marquez, Salcido, Juarez, Torrado, Guardado, Giovani, Hernandez, Bautista.
' Argentina: Romero, Otamendi, Demichelis, Burdisso, Heinze, Maxi, Mascherano, Di Maria, Tevez, Messi, Higuain.
' The teams are in...
' For any feedback before or during tonight's game please get in touch by emailing me on .
' England fans across the world will no doubt be drowning their sorrows this evening, let's hope the game tonight can take our minds off the earlier disappointment.
