The reigning champions will need to make sure they pick up all three points against debutant side Portugal if they want to guarantee themselves a spot in the round of 16.

Things in Group F are going to get very interesting on Tuesday. At the moment, three teams - Portugal, the USWNT, and the Netherlands - are all in contention for a round of 16 spot, with debutant side Vietnam already eliminated following defeats to the USWNT and Portugal.

Currently in third place, Portugal, who are one of eight teams making their debut, have picked up three points. The Navegadoras suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to the Netherlands in their World Cup opener, but rebounded quite well by defeating fellow debutants Vietnam 2-0 to keep their round of 16 hopes alive. Had Francisco Neto's side been a bit more clinical following a whopping 29 attempts on goal, Portugal certainly could've scored more. All in all, though, the victory will certainly give them confidence ahead of facing the USWNT, who will present the toughest challenge to date for the ambitious side.

A win for Portugal not only would arguably be one of the tournament's biggest upsets, but would also guarantee a spot in the round of 16 for Neto's team. A draw could also help see them over the line, but would need the Netherlands to suffer what would be a shock loss to an already elminiated Vietnam.

Meanwhile, the USWNT have received some criticism from some quarters for failing to really set the pitch alight, but the Stars and Stripes have done enough so far to make sure that they currently sit on top of Group E. The reigning champs opened their title defense with a comfortable 3-0 win over Vietnam, despite veteran striker Alex Morgan surprisingly failing to convert from 12 yards out. It wasn't the crushing win many had hoped for, with memories of the USA's 13-0 victory over Thailand four years ago, but it was enough to kick off proceedings on the right foot and set up a crucial clash against the Netherlands.

For the first time in tournament history, the two finalists from the prior World Cup faced off in the group stages, and it was a pretty evenly matched battle throughout, with both teams having to settle for a point. As things stand, the USWNT and the Netherlands will qualify for the round of 16 as the winners and runners-up of Group E. However, Portugal will want to have their say, and depending on how things pan out, Group E's standings could end up looking a lot different by the time matchday three ends.
