Tottenham Hotspur have not beaten Hull City in any of their two league matches.Preview: Spurs poised to get third-time lucky against injury-ravaged Hull City

Spurs begin this game in seventh position, behind Manchester City on goal difference. The hosts are two points above champions Manchester United and five ahead of upcoming opponents Hull City. Victory could take them up to third on the table above Southampton and Everton. That is, if Chelsea and Man City play out a draw in Sunday’s other 16:00 BST kick-off.

The Tigers, meanwhile, will be happy with leapfrogging the mighty Red Devils in eighth position. However, this would require them to record a big margin victory against Tottenham – which seems improbable given the strength of the opposition.

The last few results between Spurs and Hull City have produced very different results. In August 2009, the London-based side defeated the Tigers 5-1 with Jermaine Defoe scoring a hat-trick. Remarkably, though, Tottenham have not triumphed in any of their two home matches against this side in the league.

They lost 1-0 to an early Geovanni strike in October 2008 and stumbled to a goalless draw in January 2010. Sunday should be a good moment for Tottenham Hotspur to get their revenge, since Steve Bruce’s squad is plagued with injuries.

As Bruce admitted, Andre Villas-Boas and his men are clear favourites to win but Hull City are keen to pull out and upset.

“The money they've been able to get in for Gareth Bale has bought five or six top, top players - the likes of Roberto Soldado, Christian Eriksen, Paulinho - it's endless,” the Tigers’ manager told Sky Sports

He added:

“Then there's Lamela, that's £30m worth that we haven't really seen yet, it's a really strong squad of players.

“You can only applaud what they've done. They lost Gareth Bale, a wonderful footballer, but as a squad and as a team there's an argument they're even better.

“They've got better players than us, let's be honest. They've assembled a really good squad over the years but that's not to say we can't go there and get a result.”
