Preview

Just a few days after their confidence-boosting victory over France, Euro 2024 hosts Germany return to action, with the continental powerhouses facing another European heavyweight: the Netherlands. This fixture, scheduled to kick off at Deutsche Bank Park at 3:45 p.m. ET, promises to be an exciting showdown as both nations look to pick up steam ahead of the highly-anticipated European Championship.

The pressure is on Germany to deliver, having failed to win the European Championship since 1996. However, the four-time FIFA World Cup champions have been in steady decline since their 2014 success and while Julian Nagelsmann was appointed to turn things around, things did not immediately improve under the highly-rated tactician.

The former Bayern Munich boss went winless in all but one of his first four games in charge but the 36-year-old made amends for that atrocious start with a brilliant 2-0 victory over 2022 FIFA World Cup runners-up France.

Bayer Leverkusen Florian Wirtz scored Germany's fastest-ever goal, netting past Les Bleus only a few seconds after kick-off — depending on what source you read, Germany broke the deadlock after only seven or eight seconds. In-form Arsenal attacker Kai Havertz doubled their lead in the second half while Toni Kroos bossed the midfield in his first game since coming out of international retirement.

Regardless, this does not mean die Mannschaft are out of the woods just yet. Musiala and Co. have been grouped with Scotland, Hungary, and Switzerland and are thus expected to make the knockout stage. However, the goal is to go all the way and with the likes of France, Portugal, England, and the Netherlands all vying for the title, this could be tricky for Nagelsmann's side.

The Dutch, meanwhile, have won the European Championship only once compared to Germany's three, and just like die Mannschaft, the Netherlands have not won this coveted competition in the 21st century.

Fortunately, Ronald Koeman's men have clicked into gear ahead of their final three Euro 2024 preparatory games, winning four matches in a row since a 2-1 loss at home to France in the qualifying campaign while conceding no goals.

This includes an astonishing 6-0 victory over Gibraltar in their final Euro 2024 qualifier and an impressive 4-0 win over Scotland on Friday in their first game of the March international break.

AC Milan's Tijjani Reijnders scored his first-ever goal for the Netherlands in that 4-0 win, breaking the deadlock before Wijnaldum, Weghorst, and Malen all joined him on the scoresheet. This was the fourth game Oranje scored three or more goals in a single fixture without reply, showing the potential they have.

However, the memory of Euro 2020 remains in everyone's memory, with the Dutch crashing out in the round of 16 against the Czech Republic. Frank de Boer oversaw that campaign but Ronald Koeman was in the dugout for the Netherlands in the 2023 UEFA Nations League finals, with the European heavyweights losing first to Croatia in the semifinals and to Italy in the third-place playoff.

Team news

Germany: Manuel Neuer is unavailable, meaning another start for Ter Stegen should be on the horizon. Meanwhile. Dortmund striker Niclas Fullkrug will be hoping to start ahead of Arsenal's Kai Havertz despite the former Leverkusen starlet's impressive display against France. Leroy Sane is unavailable while Aleksandar Pavlović and Jonas Hofmann are injured.

The Netherlands: Jeremie Frimpong started in the 4-0 win over Scotland but will face competition from Denzel Dumfries. Meanwhile, Joey Veerman will be hoping to start in midfield ahead of fellow Eredivisie ace Mats Wieffer. Steven Berghuis, Frenkie de Jong, Jurrien Timber, and Micky van de Ven are all injured.

Key stats

  • The last encounter between these two sides ended in a 1-1 draw but their last competitive meeting saw the Netherlands win 4-2 in Hamburg.
