On Wednesday, Atletico Madrid will lock horns with Marseille in the Europa League final. The Spanish giant suffered embarrassment in the Champions League this season, crashing out in the group stage, but that paved their way to a European final.
All that is left for Los Rojiblancos is to beat their French opponent. With the game being played in Lyon, the Madrid giant will not have the advantage of being on home soil, but history backs Simeone’s men to lift this title.
Unlike Marseille, Atletico has reached a Europa League, winning this competition on two separate occasions. One more win and they will join three-time champion Athletic Club as the tournament’s most successful side.
A 2-1 victory over Fulham back in 2010 saw Atletico get their hands on the trophy for the first time, but it was their 2012 success that was unforgettable. Under current manager Diego Simeone, Los Rojiblancos beat Athletic Club 3-0 in the final in Bucharest.
The two times they won the Europa League, the Liga giant then went on to win the UEFA Super Cup – beating Inter Milan 2-0 in 2010 and Chelsea 4-1 in 2012.
Under El Cholo, the Spanish club has become a force to be reckoned with in Europe. The team has played in 12 UEFA finals in their history (W6, L6) – four of them were achieved during the Argentine’s reign.
With one of the continent’s meanest defenses and the deadly Griezmann-Costa attacking duo, Atletico has the talent to sweep aside Marseille. Factor in their European record and the two-time Europa League champion will be confident of adding their third on Wednesday.
