Over AFC Cup
AFC Cup History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
De AFC Cup is een jaarlijks terugkerend Aziatisch clubtoernooi dat wordt georganiseerd door de Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Het toernooi, opgericht in 2004, is qua concurrentieniveau gerangschikt onder de AFC Champions League. Het wordt doorgaans betwist door clubs uit landen die geen directe plaatsen hebben ontvangen in de AFC Champions League.
Hoewel het format van deze competitie in de loop der jaren is gewijzigd, bestaat het uit een groepsfase gevolgd door een knock-out ronde. Teams uit vijf zones nemen deel: de West-Azië Zone, Zuid-Azië Zone, Centraal-Azië Zone, ASEAN Zone en Oost-Azië Zone.
In december 2022 werd een aanzienlijke verandering aangekondigd. De AFC bracht naar buiten dat de continentale competitie-structuur vanaf het seizoen 2024-25 zou transformeren. De AFC Cup wordt opgeheven en in plaats daarvan worden er twee nieuwe toernooien geïntroduceerd: de tweede- en derde competities, respectievelijk de AFC Champions League 2 en de AFC Challenge Cup.
