The Champions League spots are almost settled but there is still quite a lot to fight for at the bottom.

The top two sides in the league are Bayern and Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund has already won the league while Bayern has already made second place their own. Bayern has nothing to play for in the league in the last two remaining games. However, the players and board alike feel that their fans always deserve a good performance.
They were true to their words in Bremen, when, despite fielding a side filled with reserve players, they claimed a 1-2 victory last week. This week, Bayern plays the final home game in the league and their second last home game of the season. Their final home game will be against Chelsea in the Champions League final on May 19th.
The Bundesliga coaching carousel has begun once again. Holger Stanislawski and Michael Skibbe lost their jobs while Markus Babel returned to the Bundesliga just four match-days after his sacking.

Hoffenheim looked like a ‘life-less’ side match after match. The club had seemingly taken all the energies out of a lively and energetic Holger Stanislawski. Hoffenheim was sinking deeper and deeper into trouble with every passing week and a change had to be made. Hoffenheim then made a ‘safe’ decision and brought in the Bavarian Markus Babel.
Babel very nearly earned a win for his side in his opening match but was denied by Marko Arnautovic in the 89th minute of the contest against Bremen. Babel’s two former clubs meanwhile played out a one sided contest in Swabia. Stuttgart battered Hertha 5-0. The match saw the reign of Michael Skibbe come to a disappointing end after the coach failed to win a single game in his short tenure.
The German Cup has thrown up a mouthwatering fixture between two old rivals: Stuttgart and Bayern.

The name of one semifinalist has already emerged. Borussia Dortmund booked their passage with a 0-4 win over amateur side Holstein Kiel. Bayern will look to emulate them as they travel to Stuttgart. In the previous round of the cup, both sides recorded narrow victories to progress: Stuttgart took out HSV 2-1 and Bayern took out Bochum 1-2.
Both sides recorded almost identical results this weekend in the Bundesliga. Stuttgart drew 2-2 against Bayer Leverkusen while Bayern drew 1-1 against HSV. Bayern has not been on form since the restart of the Bundesliga. They succumbed too easily to Gladbach on Match-day 18 and were very unconvincing against Wolfsburg the following week despite recording a 2-0 victory.
Bayern continues to lead the way on goal difference in the Bundesliga. None of the four teams which are contenders for the salad bowl dropped points this week.

Schalke was on the verge of losing their connection with the top four. Lukas Podolski struck in the fourth minute and Köln took the lead into half-time. Köln actually held on till the hour mark but Schalke found a way. An unlikely source in the form of Ciprian Marica scored the equalizer. Then, Schalke started compounding misery on Köln.
Marica grabbed a second 12 minutes later. Klaas Jan Huntelaar scored from the penalty spot just six minutes after the second goal. Benjamin Höger added one more just four minutes after the third. Now, that is what you call an ‘attacking force’. While their Ruhr rivals aren’t exactly scoring for fun, they are scoring quite a few too.
One similarity was extremely obvious in the matches of the big sides this week: they were all terribly one-sided games.

The biggest game of the weekend took place at Borussia Park between Bayern and Gladbach. The result was a one-sided victory….. for Gladbach. Schalke took on Stuttgart and dismantled them just as Gladbach did to Bayern. Dortmund drubbed HSV in sophisticated fashion in the north of Germany.
As a result, the top four teams in the Bundesliga are separated by just one point, with the top three separated by just goal difference. Karl Heinz Rummenigge wanted Bayern to be the team that every other team chases. They are the top side in the league even after the defeat- however, they are hanging on to the coveted position by nothing more than a single thread.

The Final Weekend of 2011 in the Bundesliga ended with plenty of drama as Markus Babbel was sacked as coach of Hertha Berlin.

Markus Babbel is an ambitious man. He spent long years as a player with Bayern and Liverpool and thus has a winning mentality. He perhaps saw Hertha as a club that was not going to move forward. As a result, he opted not to extend his contract and he said as much to Hertha’s general manager Michael Preetz. Preetz according to Babbel refused to be truthful to the media.
Babbel was sacked this week. He will be replaced by Michael Skibbe. Hertha’s final result under Babbel was a 1-1 draw against Hoffenheim in Sinsheim. Hertha is seated not too securely in mid table. Babel’s former team meanwhile secured the Autumn Championship in Bavaria.

Prinz Poldi’s performance against Freiburg lit up the league on a weekend that saw Bayern increase the gap between themselves and their rivals.

When Cristian Molinaro saw red about 15 minutes before half-time at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, Stuttgart’s afternoon turned completely sour. Stuttgart started the day brightly by grabbing an early goal. Bayern equalized soon afterwards through none other than Mario Gomez. Gomez grabbed the winner in the second half. He also scrambled the ball away from the goal-line, preventing a Stuttgart equalizer.
Bayern, after taking the lead, shifted down to third gear. Stuttgart came within inches of scoring an equalizer. Daniel Van Buyten’s giveaway to Cacau led to the Stuttgart man aiming towards an empty net only to send the ball slightly over the net and into the stands. Due to other results, Bayern now has a three point lead over their rivals and a superior goal difference to go along with the lead.

The 2010-11 Bundesliga Season provided plenty of surprises, headlines and thrills.

Unbelievable, Unusual, Unreal- These three words are the only ways in which this Bundesliga season can be described. This season has been even more dramatic than the 2006-07 episode which saw VfB Stuttgart crowned champions.
Yes, we all knew Borussia Dortmund would be champions in December. However, looking at the bigger picture, it is still quiet unusual to imagine that Dortmund is the side currently holding the Ugly Salad Bowl. Dortmund wouldn’t even have been part of the Bundesliga had events that transpired six years ago turned out slightly differently. Dortmund was almost bankrupt; yet they managed to change their policies and put together a brilliant side in just six years.
Eduardo Salvio has absolutely no fears ahead of tonight’s PSG vs Benfica match in the UEFA Europa League. The Eagles actually enter the game with a 2-1 advantage.

“I think we have the necessary to get through,” Salvio told UEFA’s official website.
“Against Stuttgart, we didn’t play very well in the first half [in Lisbon] but managed to come back and win.
“At home to PSG, we weren’t very good in the first half either, but once more we turned things in our favour.
“Looking at the home matches against Stuttgart and PSG, as well as the 2-0 win in Stuttgart, we are confident of making the last eight.
“I think we can score in France like we did in Germany. We all know it will be a very difficult game but we have very good, experienced players who can help us through.”
Dortmund conquered holders Bayern while ten-men Stuttgart beat Frankfurt.

FC Bayern’s lack of a “Plan B” saw them crash down to earth following a great victory at the San Siro. San Siro was the venue when Bayern hoisted their last European Cup in 2001.
Similarly, the Olympic Stadium was the venue when Dortmund lifted the European Cup in 1997 in Munich. On Saturday, Dortmund battered the bench-mark for all German sides, Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena for the first time since 1991.
Meanwhile, Stuttgart produced a great display as they earned a much needed three points in the battle for survival. What was special about the win was that they achieved the feat with only ten men.
We now preview match-day one of the UEFA Europa League with from Group G to Group L. Watch out for a great night of European football with accustomed Champions League contenders Liverpool and FC Porto vying for a successful campaign.

Which One Is The Most Interesting – Group H, Group I, or Group J?
Group H is a section where three of the four teams drawn look potentially good enough to each shape the table its own way. You look at Getafe and Stuttgart and you are almost sure that these two sides aren’t just going to travel around Europe but fail on the pitch.
They’ll definitely make things tough as Group H favorites. Besides Getafe and Stuttgart’s threat, there is also BSC Young Boys. More luck would have seen them compete in this season’s UEFA Champions League competition at the expense of Tottenham Hotspur. Unfortunately for the Swiss, they suffered a 6-3 aggregate defeat to Spurs despite holding a 3-2 advantage ahead of the second leg in the play-off.
Like Aston Villa, VfB Stuttgart will play in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, August 19. They'll face Slovan Bratislava in Slovakia in a match that is scheduled to kick off at 14:45 EST.
VfB Stuttgart defeated Molde 5-4 on aggregate in the 3rd round of qualifiers. They had to stage a comeback to avoid an upset. Stuttgart’s rather poor performance but brave result left Coach Christian Gross unimpressed by his boys although he was still happy with his side’s progress into the play-off.
Christian Gross branded his team's display as "not good", declaring that he expects more from his players who created only few chances, and "never managed to change the rhythm of the game" as they "lacked precision".
FC Barcelona will play their season’s most important match on the evening of Wednesday March 17, when they entertain VfB Stuttgart at the Estadio Camp Nou in the UEFA Champions League.
Barcelona’s sloppy form lately has left them struggling in all remaining competitions, and against Stuttgart, their condition is evident.
A loss will directly eliminate them from the Champions League, while a draw – containing more than a goal each for both sides – will not be enough either to keep them in the competition.
FC Barcelona – Do or Die
The European title holders were held to a 1-1 draw by Stuttgart away to the Mercedes-Benz Arena stadium.
Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic got a second-half equalizer for Barcelona after Cacau had taken the lead for the hosts.
German giants VfB Stuttgart will face title holders FC Barcelona in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League at the Mercedes-Benz Arena stadium on February 23.
Stuttgart – ready for their challenge?
The Germans should normally not fear anything ahead of this clash despite the undeniable strength of the defending European champions. They qualified into this stage after holding on to the second place in Group G, finishing with 9 points following 2 wins, 3 draws, and a loss.
Stuttgart were only able to grab half of their points in the group stage of the Champions League; yet, their statistics aren’t too bad, as they could still force their way through the knockout phase above Scottish giants Rangers, and new comers Unirea Urziceni.
Stuttgart won 5 Bundesliga matches in a row between the 19th of December 2009 and the 6th of February 2010; and for sure, this shows how set they are to take on the Spanish League leaders.
