Sir Alex Ferguson’s Five Most Important Days as Manager of Manchester United

Monday November 7 2011,
Tags: Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United
Sir Alex Ferguson celebrated his 25th anniversary as Manchester United manager with a 1-0 Premier League victory over Sunderland this past weekend.
Sunderland were managed by Ferguson’s former defensive stalwart Steve Bruce, and another former Red Devil settled matters when Wes Brown put through his own goal to give United all three points.

The victory against Sunderland was Ferguson’s 836th win as United manager, and one end of the Old Trafford stadium was renamed the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand in a pre-game ceremony.

There have been countless days of joy, pride and achievement for Sir Alex over his time at United. Here we pick out five of what must be the most significant.

JANUARY 7th, 1990

It seems strange to think now, but when Ferguson led United into an FA Cup third round tie at Nottingham Forest in 1990, there was a growing sentiment among United fans that he should have been sacked.

Manchester United Reserves Give Sir Alex Ferguson Options After Carling Cup Win

Wednesday October 26 2011,
Tags: Manchester United, Carling Cup, Sir Alex Ferguson
Manchester United strolled into the Carling Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday night with a convincing 3-0 win at Aldershot.
The result in itself was not a surprise, but it will provide some relief for United after their 6-1 mauling at the hands of Manchester City over the weekend. Many players also performed well and allowed Sir Alex Ferguson some depth if he wants to make some changes to his team selection next time out.

Last season’s Golden Boot winner Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen and Ecuadorian winger Antonio Valencia all found themselves on the score sheet in a performance that Sir Alex Ferguson described as disciplined and professional. This is a long way from his assessment of the weekend’s loss to City, when the United manager described their performance as “suicidal.”

Defiant Michael Owen Vows to Keep Scoring Goals for Manchester United

Thursday September 22 2011,
Tags: Michael Owen, Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson
Michael Owen is one of the great goal scorers of his generation, his lethal pace and clinical finishing saw him become one of the great strikers of the late 1990’s and early 2000’s.
Owen scored over 100 goals for Liverpool and won the Ballon D’or Award in 2001. Owen also won back to back Golden Boot Award’s as the Premier League’s leading goal scorer in 1998 and 1999.

Real Madrid signed Owen in 2005, but when the striker later signed for Newcastle United, it was tantamount to a semi-retirement in the eyes of many fans.

It was thought that the lack of Champions League football would hurt Owen, and his England career would peter out and come to an end. That is exactly how things turned out, but Owen had one surprise move left in him.

In the summer of 2009 Owen signed for Manchester United to the surprise of many. Rather than hurting Liverpool fans, it barely raised a mention among many fans as most perceived Owen as “past it” and predicted a short and pointless Old Trafford career for the striker.

Is it possible that Manchester United, and more specifically Sir Alex Ferguson are the reason that Fabio Capello will weather this storm ?

The answer could be yes, but the FA must consider their approach to dealing with Ferguson.

MLS All-Stars vs Manchester United: Ferguson Expecting Tougher Challenge

Last summer saw Manchester United trample the MLS All-Stars side through a 5-2 victory; but Coach Sir Alex Ferguson has declared that the imminent clash would probably be visibly different.
The Red Devils are currently on a tour in the United States as part of their preparations for the upcoming season, and they have so far shown great stability. They came from behind to defeat Chicago Fire 3-1 on July 23; however, Fergie has yet to make space for complaisance in his team, knowing how costly this mistake could be.

“We are at the stage where the games are a bit more serious,” the Manchester United manager stated during a press conference.

“The MLS (All-Stars) team is much stronger than the team we played last year, with players like David Beckham and Thierry Henry. Both are fantastic footballers with a great profile.”

Two of the best teams in Europe are set to battle it out at Wembley. Wondering what to bet? Live Soccer TV explains a few things that you should avoid betting on.

1) Lionel Messi Will Not Score - A simple statement that can easily be outdrove by simple statistics. 52 goals in 54 matches for Barcelona this season virtually speaks for himself. 2) Darron Gibson To Snatch The Winner - Darron Gibson's popularity level within the United fans can be demonstrated by the 'twitter incident' that took place last month or so. Gibson created a twitter account, only to shut it down after a few hours following terrible outbursts from United fanatics over his capabilities. If you really want to bet something on Gibson, then at least predict that he will be left out of the matchday squad at Wembley. Now that's something realistic.
