FIFA Ballon d’Or 2011 award shortlists for men’s player and coach of the year revealed

The FIFA Ballon d’Or 2011 gala is 35 days away from taking place and the shortlists for the men’s awards have been revealed.
Most football fans are particularly interested in the player award nomination. Lionel Messi, who is the reigning champion, is poised to retain his title. However, his 2011 Copa America fiasco with Argentina could cost him a ball made of gold. A potential contender would be Luis Suarez. The ex-Ajax striker was controversially omitted from the 2010 FIFA Ballon d'Or award list.

Expectedly, Xavi and Cristiano Ronaldo have been named alongside Messi whereas Sergio Aguero, Nani, Wayne Rooney and Luis Suarez are the only English Premier League-based players in the list.

Interestingly, young Brazilian star Neymar is part of it. Copa America hero Diego Forlan and Anzhi Makhachkala’s Samuel Eto’o have been included as well.

Manchester United vs Manchester City and the EPL table

Saturday October 22 2011,
Tags: Sergio Aguero
Sunday’s Manchester United vs Manchester City match will not just be a derby. It will actually be about the current battle at the top of the English Premier League table.
The undefeated Manchester City club has been impressive this season in the EPL, having recorded 7 wins in 8 games played. They have also been quite precise in front of goal, averaging a bit more than 3 goals per encounter.

Their tight defence has enabled them to secure a goal difference of +21; but more importantly, City lead the overall standings with 22 points. This means they are only 2 points ahead of arch-rivals Manchester United.

Undoubtedly, their lead has yet to be a comfortable one. What matters though - at least for now - is that they have a big advantage, which they could use to increase their chances of realizing their title dream before the end of the league race.

Sergio Aguero struck in the fourth minute of injury time to hand Manchester City a dramatic 2-1 win over Villarreal in Group A play.
City still sit outside the top two qualification spots in a difficult Group A, but are now only one point below second placed SSC Napoli.

Roberto Mancini had told the official UEFA website this week that this was a game his team would “need to win.” With those words ringing in their ears, it must have doubled the pressure when Villarreal took a 4th minute lead courtesy of Cani.

Joe Hart had saved a long range Giuseppe Rossi strike, but Spanish midfielder Cani was on hand to turn home the rebound.

City pressed forward in search of an equalizer, with Aleksandar Kolarov forcing Diego Lopez into a smart save from a free kick, before blazing another effort wide of the target.

Manchester City dropped their first points of the Premier League season when they drew 2-2 with Fulham at Craven Cottage.
City got off to a good start when David Silva played in Sergio Aguero to open the scoring inside of 20 minutes.

The lead was doubled just 12 seconds into the second half, when Gael Clichy’s long pass was head down by Edin Dzeko, and Aguero fired past Mark Schwarzer. City fans could have been forgiven for thinking at that point that another win was on its way, though that is not how things transpired.

Firt Bobby Zamora fired into the top corner from 20 yards out, and then Danny Murphy beat Joe Hart with a deflected shot earn a share of the points.

After beginning the season with four consecutive wins, scoring 15 goals in the process, this game was the second time in a week City have shown flaws.

Premier League Sharp-shooters: Wayne Rooney’s On Fire!

In an early season run of record-breaking for his team, Wayne Rooney, Saturday, became only the fourth player in history to record back-to-back hat-tricks in Premier League football, emulating the feats of Les Ferdinand, Ian Wright and Didier Drogba before him.

Premier League Sharp-shooters: Manchester United's Wayne Rooney is on fire! Rooney’s treble also took him onto 125 PL career goals, leapfrogging over Nicolas Anelka and Robbie Keane, two of only four current players who prior to Saturday, had been above him in the list.  Frank Lampard (140) and club-mate Michael Owen (149) are now firmly in his sights.

The Croxteth-born striker is now #10 in the all-time PL top-scorers list, but has still got some way to go to match the 260 PL goals scored by former England captain Alan Shearer for Blackburn Rovers & Newcastle United. At 25 though, time is on his side.

With Rooney’s already burgeoning reputation growing apace with his new hair, United have set the standard for the rest to follow this term.

What went wrong with Argentina, Brazil, Colombia & Chile at the Copa America?

This is not what the majority of the public—led by supporters of the strongest teams—wanted to see. Argentina, Colombia, Brazil and Chile are all out of the 2011 Copa America!

Uruguay stunned Argentina and are now favourites to win the 2011 Copa America trophyHow it happened

Argentina had raised early doubts about their chances of winning the competition when Bolivia and Colombia both held them to draws. But having bounced back in style against Costa Rica, hopes got rekindled until Uruguay had the last say in the quarter-finals.

Even Lionel Messi’s majestic performance couldn’t destroy La Celeste Olimpica as Tevez’s penalty miss in the shoot-outs sealed Argentina’s exit. One could now wonder about Sergio Batista’s future with the Albiceleste.

In the meantime, Colombia might find it hard to face reality. What really prevented them from finding their way against Peru? After qualifying from the group stages with 7 points, football fans and pundits had backed the Colombians to maintain their composure and at least reach the semi-finals. The truth, however, is that Los Cafeteros have allowed the Peruvians to keep dreaming at the 2011 Copa America.

2011 Copa America: Who Is To Be Held Responsible For Argentina, Brazil And Uruguay's Disappointing Opening Game?

Wednesday July 6 2011,
Tags: Sergio Aguero, Sergio Batista, Lio Messi, Radamel Falcao
Is there a logic behind Argentina Football Federation's president Julio Grondona's belief that "Messi never plays badly"? Never underestimate the power of denial.
Shouldn't Argentina's coach introduce a few modifications in his scheme to face Group A leader Colombia on Wednesday night? What about Mano Menezes, and Oscar Tabarez?

It's true we're set to witness a much more aggressive football this week, as Argentina cannot waste a golden opportunity to claim the top position of the group, while Colombia knows a victory (or even a draw, depending on the result of Costa Rica vs Bolivia) could seal Los Cafeteros' qualification for the knockouts.

The same applies for Group B, as Brazil locks horns with Paraguay this Saturday. Unlike Venezuela, Paraguayan coach Gerardo Martino confessed the Guarani squad "will be aggressive, determined to attack and play the ball whenever possible". He might need the combined strength of Nelson Haedo Valdez, Lucas Barrios and Roque Santa Cruz to break the Brazilian defense.

“Argentina Must Win Or Win” As Tevez & Co Rule Out Anything Less Than Success

Thursday June 23 2011,
Tags: Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero, Lionel Messi
After going 18 years without knowing glory in the Copa America, Argentina’s Albicelestes have given themselves a task with two options. They must win or win.
The 2011 Copa America will be played in Argentina and there’s no way Batista’s men would want to see the cup leaving their country. “We did what we knew how to do and we’ve got to play this way against whichever team we play,” said an ambitious Lionel Messi following Argentina’s 4-0 demolishing of Albania a few days ago.

Most pundits and fans might think the time has come for the Albicelestes to at last clinch silverware. In fact, Sergio Batista could be considered a very lucky coach with the likes of star strikers such as Aguero, Tevez and two-time world best player Lionel Messi at his disposal. Above all, there have been no reports of major injury blows from the camp of the Argentines so far.

Barcelona are apparently eyeing for the signature of Sergio Aguero but do they even need him?
Sergio Aguero is destined for a move away from Atletico Madrid this summer with Barcelona being reported to be keen admirers of the Argentinean. However, former Barca favorite Julio Salinas believes that the Catalans do not need a player of Aguero's caliber and claims that the Argentinean would be better off at Real Madrid.

"I think Barcelona will not sign the 'Kun' because they are not looking for a player of that profile, not looking for a striker. I think Aguero fits in better with Real Madrid."

Nonetheless, Salinas did suggest that Cesc Fabregas would be the perfect addition to a Barcelona squad that is brimming with talent. Anyhow, Salinas also added that Fabregas will have to compete from the base if indeed his dream move materializes.
