Fernando Santos went with experience over youth in his 25-man selection. Will this prove fatal for the Greeks in this summers Euro 2012?

Over the last few weeks there have been many rumors regarding who Fernando Santos would choose for this summers Euro 2012. It is now safe to say that he may have thrown many people a curve ball with his 25-man provisional roster. Looking at the squad he chose, he clearly went for experience over youth, which leaves many fans surprised.
One of the surprises for many was the inclusion of 36-year-old Nikos Liberopoulos from AEK Athens FC. Although he only featured two times for Greece in the qualifying stage of the competition, he somehow managed to beat out PAOK FC's Stefanos Athanasiadis who had an impressive campaign.
Santos passed up on two other promising young talents - Apoel goalkeeper Dionysis Chiotis and Panathinaikos striker Lazaros Christodoulopoulos. After the stellar display Chiotis had in the UEFA Champions League this season, many would have though that he would have been an option.

The Uruguayan international believes he made the right choice in leaving FC Porto for the South American champions.

Jorge Fucile, the Uruguayan right-back of Santos, affirmed that he has had no trouble adapting to Brazilian soccer since joining the South American champions from FC Porto this season.
Fucile also expressed his appreciation for the manner in which his new team-mates and the Santos fans have treated him upon his arrival.
"The fans received me very well, everyone with their arms wide open. For this reason my adaptation to Brazilian soccer has been easier. I'm passing through a good moment here. We feel the pressure to win titles, and I hope to continue to help Santos win. We are working for this," stated Fucile, before revealing his best friends within the Santos squad.
Fresh off a superb hat-trick against Internacional, the gifted striker believes Santos are in for a tricky test.

Santos ace Neymar believes that his team's Copa Libertadores clash with Juan Aurich on Thursday will be "tough" because according to him the Peruvians are "a good team."
Neymar took pressure off his side by declaring that Santos don't come into the game as the favourites, even if they face a side with little Copa Libertadores experience.
Santos arrived in Lima on Tuesday in preparation for what is expected to be a hotly contested battle between two teams that are in much need of the three points.
The striker is on the verge of completing a high-profile move to the Club World Cup finalists.

Boca Juniors star Pablo Mouche admitted that he would be delighted to join Brazilian outfit Santos next season. The pacy winger has recently been linked with a move to the side from the Vila Belmiro as they intend to rebuild after their catastrophic defeat to Barcelona in the final of the Club World Cup earlier in December.
"I would love to. It would be a nice step, a step forward in my career. If it is good for the club and for me, this possibility, I would go delighted," Mouche said to La Red.
"It is a high-quality competition [the Brazilian Serie A], where excellent players have emerged from, who have gone on to Europe, and have returned as extraordinary players and of sublime caliber, like Ronaldinho. Neymar is there as well. They play a style of soccer which I love," added the enthusiastic striker.
The 2011 FIFA Club World Cup final between Barcelona and Santos is heated up with the thrilling individual battle between Neymar and Lionel Messi.

Somehow, the Neymar-Messi rivalry has become more notable in recent weeks due to Pele’s controversial statement that placed the Brazilian far ahead of the Barcelona superstar in terms of accomplishment.
Pele stated that what made Neymar a more complete player was his ability to score goals and to play well with both feet, on both flanks, and for his club as well as for his country. Hence, Sunday will be a time for correction for Messi in the Club World Cup final.
Even if nothing changes Pele’s opinion, both players should at least prove themselves in a game on which all eyes will be set. Below, we look at both players’ run in the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup so far:
FC Barcelona face Santos in the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup final in Yokohama, and the Catalans are willing to prove that the team is as united as ever.

With their only aim being to win the Club World Cup title once again, Barcelona are not ready to let anything get on their way. Key player Pedro Rodriguez declared that the announcement of David Villa’s injury came as the “worst news in the world”.
Even so, the team is prepared to make the best out of what some would consider as bad luck: “Villa’s injury motivates us more, because he really wanted to win this title for the first time,” Pedro told the press.
But the club’s assistant manager is also in the players’ minds. Tito Vilanova underwent surgery in November following a problem with his parotid gland.
Neymar stars as Santos reach the final of the Club World Cup after cruising past Kashiwa Reysol on Wednesday.

Neymar took advantage of his Club World Cup debut by scoring an extraordinary goal to lead Santos to a comfortable 3-1 victory over Kashiwa Reysol, a result that sent the Brazilians into the final of the competition which takes place on December 18.
Santos' opponents in the final will either be European champions Barcelona or Asian champions Al Sadd, who face-off in Yokohama on Thursday.
Both teams pushed to the attack immediately from the kick-off in a swift beginning to the game at the Toyota stadium. Teenage prodigy Neymar almost gave Santos an early lead in the 4th minute, but his close-range effort struck the left post, to the relief of the locals.
The 2011 FIFA Club World Cup will finally receive the attention it deserves in midweek thanks to the appearances of Brazilian champions Santos and European giants Barcelona.
Santos will lock horns with Japan’s Kashiwa Reysol in the first semi-final match of the competition. The match is due to take place at 5:30am EST (10:30am GMT) on Wednesday.
The Japanese contenders had a hard time against Monterrey last Sunday. Extra-time and penalties were needed to see Kashiwa Reysol through.
That game tested the mentality of the Sun Kings who, once again, explained why Asian football should not be overlooked by the majority of world football’s avid followers. But how would 120 minutes of action affect Kashiwa Reysol’s fitness status against Santos?
Led by the brilliant Neymar South American champions Santos open their Club World Cup quest against Kashiwa Reysol on Wednesday.

Santos and Kashiwa Reysol lock horns at the Toyota stadium on Wednesday for a place in the final of the FIFA Club World Cup. All eyes will be glued on Santos prodigy Neymar, who along with classy playmaker Paulo Henrique Ganso and scoring-machine Borges, will be called upon for Santos' attacking firepower.
Neymar, in particular, has attracted the attention of several of Europe's top clubs, due to his consistently brilliant performances in the Brazilian championship and in the Copa Libertadores, where he played a key role as Santos edged Penarol of Uruguay 2-1 to win their third title.
The Brazilian international will be hoping to be in top form against Kashiwa Reysol in order to lead Santos to what could possibly be a final showdown against European champions FC Barcelona.
The classy playmaker has resigned a move to Europe to remain at the Copa Libertadores champions.

Santos playmaker Paulo Henrique Ganso has affirmed that he will be prepared to reopen talks about extending his Santos stay at the conclusion of the FIFA Club World Cup, which takes place in December.
There has been ongoing speculation about a future move to Europe for Ganso, however, the 22-year-old admitted that his priority is to remain at Santos, particularly because he wants to help the club retain their Copa Libertadores title in 2012.
Ganso has attracted the attention of several of Europe's top clubs, including AC Milan, Manchester United and both Barcelona and Real Madrid. But he is likely to stay put for now because he has a contract with Santos that currently runs until 2015.
The 53rd edition of the Copa Libertadores, South America's maximum club competition, will kick-off on January 25 with the first round clash between Penarol and Caracas FC in Montevideo.

The match-up between Penarol of Uruguay and Caracas FC of Venezuela is the only one to have already been decided corresponding to the first stage of the 2012 Copa Libertadores after the draw was made in Asuncion, Paraguay, on Friday.
Penarol, one of the most successful clubs since the installment of the continental competition back in 1960, will entertain the Venezuelans in the inaugurating match at the Centenario stadium of Montevideo on January 25.
Defending champions Santos of Brazil, who boast two of South America's most exciting players in Neymar and Paulo Henrique Ganso, will take part in Group 1, alongside a team from Peru and Bolivia, and the winners of the first round match-up between a side from Brazil and Colombia.
It looks like Real Madrid have finally clinched victory in the race for Santos and Brazil’s adventurous kid, Neymar...

According to ESPNsoccernet, “a £53 million deal is in place” to materialize a transfer from Brazil to Madrid for Neymar. The total fee of the deal could reach £150 million considering the value of image rights and commercial agreements among other factors.
“Neymar will be a Real Madrid player in July, but he is not going there any earlier. He has not signed a contract as yet,” a source told ESPN.
Current Santos player Neymar expressed his desire to join Chelsea at several occasions in the past. However, a switch to Barcelona seemed more likely. Earlier in September, as talks between Santos and Barca were reportedly unproductive for the Catalans, defender Dani Alves told the press:
The coach is confident that the Santos genius will be the best in the world come World Cup year.

Neymar, the hottest property to have emerged from Brazilian soccer in recent years, has received praise from all corners of the globe due to consistently producing high-quality soccer which not only has allowed him to cement his position in the Brazilian national team, but has also helped him attract massive-scale interest from Europe's top clubs, where Real Madrid are the front-runners to secure his signature.
Not only has Neymar been in fine form in the Brazilian league, but he played a key role as Santos won the 2011 Copa Libertadores, South America's maximum club competition. Muricy Ramalho, the coach of Santos, knows Neymar inside out and rates the striker very highly. Ramalho was delighted to see that Neymar was one of fifty players to be nominated for 2011 FIFA World Player of the Year.
"It is a great merit from the player, from his family, who also have supported him, and also from Santos, who don't stop betting on him," Ramalho said to Globoesporte.
The final moments of the 2011 summer transfer window produced a handful of interesting news. Arsene Wenger’s late shopping robbed the headlines.

Arsenal’s club, fans and coach are hoping to put their agonizing days behind them. Last Sunday’s horrific 8-2 defeat to Manchester United was the final loud call for Wenger to spend money on the transfer market. Andre Santos, Yossi Benayoun and Mertesacker have therefore become Arsenal’s latest captures.
“Santos is a quality player, with the ability to both defend well and get forward and help with attacks,” Wenger declared according to Arsenal’s official website as he talked about Andre Santos’ switch from Fenerbahçe.
“He has experience in the Champions League and for Brazil. He has proven he can deliver at the highest level.”
As the summer transfer window is just about to close, it looks like Arsenal are closing in on a few deals to boost their stripped squad.

Carl Jenkinson—who saw red against Manchester United on Week 3—and Gervinho got added to Arsenal’s list earlier this summer. But Arsene Wenger explained that the club was looking forward to welcoming a few more players before the end of the transfer window. Last Friday, the Frenchman declared as Arsenal.com reported:
“It is important [to strengthen the team] because we will lose players in January with players going to the African Nations Cup. We will lose Gervinho and Chamakh together.
“So, first of all, it is important to strengthen up front. It is important that we find one midfielder and one defender as well. So we are still short of three bodies.”
Sunday’s Puebla vs Pachuca match will kick start the 2011 Apertura Tournament of Mexico’s Primera Division. Kick-off time is at 12:55pm ET on ESPN Deportes.

Matches featuring Cruz Azul and Santos Laguna will be broadcasted live whereas as fans can watch out for an exciting encounter on September 24 when Cruz Azul will affront Guadalajara at 6pm ET. Confirming ESPN Deportes’ rights to cover the 2011 Apertura Tournament, the channel’s Mexican football expert Ciro Procuna reportedly declared:
“The 2011 Apertura Tournament is not to be missed. Pumas and Chivas have two solid and reliable teams; Santos, Monterrey, and Tigres will be competing with great lineups for the Northern supremacy.
“Cruz Azul and America are two big teams that have fallen behind and need to step up their game. Mexico has one of the continent’s most competitive leagues.”
La Celeste depends on a victory to reach the knockouts. Mexico does not want to be sent back home in shame after two consecutive defeats.

The third game of the group stage offers Chile and Peru (already qualified with four points) a perfect opportunity to try different alternatives in their formation while at the same time cleaning their discipline record.
Matias Fernandez and Alexis Sanchez have been the back bone of Claudio Borghi's successful scheme in the last games, building strong attacks thanks to Mauricio Isla's and Arturo Vidal's security in the midfield.
Sanchez and Vidal won't be part of the starting eleven, for they've already been booked once and another yellow card could compromise their presence in the next game. Is Chile a serious contender without WonderBoy?
Peruvian coach Sergio Markarian is likely to follow Borghi's example and give Paolo Guerrero and Juan Vargas a day-off, as their presence will be mandatory for Peru if they are to reach the semi-finals. Do you think Peru can survive the American fight without their two brightest stars?
